What type of player profile wins the The Open?
The Open Championship, or British Open as it's also known, is unique from other major tournaments as it's always played on a links course. That being the case there are definite players who thrive in links conditions, which are usually windy with slow greens and tight lies. This doesn't necessarily rule out players with little experience of playing on UK links courses before as there have been plenty of exceptions.
The tournament is played over a circuit of ten different courses (listed below), each differ in characteristic and difficulty. Pot bunkers and the elements are the courses' biggest defence and on benign days weather-wise scoring can be good.
Rough can be sparse at some courses but 'out of bounds' comes into play a lot and the fairway bunkers are designed to catch out players who don't have good course management.
As with any major, the favourites have their fair share of wins in The Open, but there have also been some winners at big odds including Todd Hamilton in 2004 and Paul Lawrie in 1999.
