Which Champions League Team to Bet on in 2023/24
With the exception of Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid side of 2015-18, it’s been notoriously difficult to win successive Champions Leagues. This quirk makes betting on the competition particularly difficult, especially during knockout rounds.
There are many things to consider when looking at Champions League winner odds: new signings, new managers, notable departures, and recent performances in Europe’s elite club competition. Try to be objective when selecting your outright winner of the Champions League – football betting has no interest in sentimentality. Let’s take a look at this year’s main contenders.
Man City
Man City finally overcame their Champions League hex last season, winning the competition for the first time in the club’s history and cementing an historic treble in the process. Pep Guardiola’s side beat Inter Milan 1-0 in the final in a cagey affair that could have gone either way. They’ll be favourites to retain the title, though their squad doesn’t look quite as formidable as it did a year ago: Riyad Mahrez, Ilkay Gundogan, Aymeric Laporte, Joao Cancelo and Cole Palmer have all left the club; Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic, Matheus Nunes and Jeremy Doku have been signed as replacements – they join Erling Haaland, Kevin de Bruyne and a host of other superstars in the City squad.
Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich last lifted the Champions League trophy during the Covid-hit season of 2019/20, defeating PSG in the final. The German juggernaut has won a record eleven Bundesliga titles in a row and added the services of England captain Harry Kane to their squad in the summer, as well as highly-rated South Korean centre-back Min-jae Kim from Napoli; Lucas Hernandez, Ryan Gravenberch, Benjamin Pavard, Sadio Mane and Marcel Sabitzer are the notable departees. Their manager Thomas Tuchel won the Champions League with Chelsea in 2021 and has plenty of world-class talent at his disposal, including Leroy Sane, Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala.
Real Madrid
No side has more European crowns than Real Madrid, who won the last of their 14 titles in 2022, beating Liverpool 1-0 in the final. There have been two major transfer stories at the Bernebeu this summer: Jude Bellingham has arrived from Borussia Dortmund, while Karim Benzema left to join the Saudi Pro League. Vinicius Jr, Luka Modric and Toni Kroos are some of the big names in the Madrid dressing room, but there’s a sense that Madrid’s hold on the Champions League trophy could be coming to an end.
PSG
It's been a tumultuous time at PSG over the last few seasons, with reports of in-fighting and dissent among the squad. Kylian Mbappe has been the centre of controversy but he seems to have ended his feud with the club’s hierarchy – the Frenchman is probably the world’s best player. Manager Luis Enrique has overhauled the squad he inherited in the summer, with Lionel Messi, Neymar, Marco Verratti and many others leaving Paris. PSG have spent over £300m trying to replace them: Randal Kolo Muani, Manuel Ugarte, Ousmane Dembele and Lucas Hernandez are four of the big-name signings. Despite their extravagant spending over a number of years, PSG have never won the Champions League.
Barcelona
Barcelona’s Champions League winner odds will reflect the fact the Catalan club has not progressed beyond the group stages of the competition in the last two seasons. The club has been in financial turmoil during that time, struggling to fill the void left by Messi. Now under the management of Barcelona legend Xavi, the club has rebuilt its squad and will be looking to reach the latter stages. Gundogan and Cancelo have joined from City, as well as Joao Felix on loan from Atletico Madrid; Dembele, Antoine Griezmann and Ansu Fati are three major departures. Barcelona has won the competition five times but hasn’t lifted the trophy since 2015.
Arsenal
Arsenal is competing in the Champions League for the first time in seven years. Mikel Arteta’s young side are capable of reaching the latter stages, but Champions League winner odds will consider their inexperience at this level. Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard and William Saliba are some of their star players, now joined by Declan Rice who signed from West Ham in the summer. The Gunners have never won the Champions League – their best result came as runners-up to Barcelona in 2006.
Man United
Champions League winner odds will be incredibly long on Man United, particularly after their poor start to the season. With issues on and off the field, it will be considered a success if United progress from their group. New big-money signing Rasmus Hojlund will hope to bring renewed optimism to Old Trafford this season – he joins Mason Mount and Andre Onana as the club’s major recruits this summer.
Napoli
Napoli stormed to their first Serie A title since the days of Diego Maradona last season, playing attacking, free-flowing football and scoring goals for fun. Victor Osimhen and Kvicha Kvaratskhelia did most of the damage – they’ll be joined in the forward line by Giacomo Raspadori and Giovanni Simeone this season, while Kim and Hirving Lazano are the big players to have left the club. Last season’s quarter-final appearance was Napoli’s best ever result in the Champions League, so outright odds on them to win will be longer than some of the other teams here.
Champions League Winner Betting Markets
The Champions League attracts a huge number of bets every year and there are a number of different markets related to the outright winner. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular.
Champions League Winner
Simply select your outright winner for the Champions League in this betting market.
Each Way
Each way bets mitigate some of the risk by paying out on selections that haven’t won. Let’s say you placed an each way bet on Barcelona to win the Champions League – your bookmaker would pay out if they were to both win and lose in the final. The odds will be shorter as a result, but it means bettors aren’t required to be exactly right.
Winner/Top Goalscorer Double
You can place a double bet on both the winner of the Champions League and which player will be the competition’s top scorer. Your selection for the golden boot needn’t come from the same team you pick to win; for example, you could pick Robert Lewandowski and Man City.
Name the Finalists
Which two teams will make it to the Champions League final? Have your say in this market.
To Reach the Final
If you’re only feeling confident about one team to make the final, you can stick to your guns in this market.
Nationality of Winning Club
You can also wager on which country is home to the Champions League winning club. Spain is top of the table by this statistic thanks to the successes of Real Madrid and Barcelona over the years.
Group Winners (A-H)
The Champions League format consists of an initial round of eight groups of four, in which teams play each other twice before the top two progress to the knockout rounds. One of the most exciting bets you can place on the Champions League – and one that generates the biggest odds – is an accumulator on all of the groups’ eight winners.

Previous Champions League Winners
Since 1955/56, Europe has sought to crown one club as the best team in the continent. The Champions League was known as the European Cup until the competition was reformatted for the 1992/93 season – a point of irritation for some football fans who believe the old competition and its history have been largely forgotten. In any case, the European Cup and Champions League refer to different iterations of the same competition.
Let’s take a look at all the Champions League winners since 92/93.
