The relegated Birmingham City, for all of last season’s problems, are considered too strong for others to compete in League One, and have been presented as frontrunners for the title.
Next in the betting are Bolton Wanderers, who were anticipated to achieve automatic promotion from the division last season, finished third and were unable to win the play-offs, losing out to Oxford United at Wembley.
Also pitched at double figure odds to win the title are Rotherham United. This will be the Millers’ first season back in the third tier since suffering the drop last term, where they finished rock bottom of the table having only picked up 27 points over 46 games.
Huddersfield Town, the third team relegated into League One for the 2024/25 season, are the largest priced team to win the third tier title of the former Championship trio. The Terriers could go strong with this reset, especially boasting one of the division’s best managers in Michael Duff.
Wrexham’s meteoric rise through the divisions has a good chance of continuing according to the bookmakers. The Hollywood-backed Welsh club are the league’s fifth favourites to win the title and the size of their purse strings suggests they’re a difficult outfit to doubt.
Despite the sale of their talismanic striker and last season’s League One top goalscorer, Charlton Athletic are the sixth and final club priced under 20/1 to win the 2024/25 third tier title.
Under the promise of providing their fans with positive and entertaining football, Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough United are still considered to be in with a good shout of claiming the 2024/25 League One title.
With the recruitment of significant firepower in Jordan Rhodes and Ashley Fletcher for the latest campaign, Blackpool could be a fantastic outsider in the League One winner betting.
Barnsley’s expectations have been heightened after successive play-off finishes, however, the anticipated rebuild could dent any ambitions to win the league this season.
League One newbies Stockport County beat Wrexham to claim last season’s League Two title, established as still being worthy contenders to finish 1st in League One following back-to-back promotions.
Overachievers and Underachievers in the League One 2023/2024 Season
Charlton Athletic’s Alfie May was one of the League One 2023/24 season overachievers, hitting 20+ goals for the third consecutive season since joining the Addicks despite his team’s 16th placed finish.
After switching management from Joey Barton to Matt Taylor, there was optimism within the Bristol Rovers camp towards the idea of promotion. However, the Gas ended up finishing nine places and 19 points away from this mark in the 2023/24 season, which is well beyond where they ought to be.
League One Promotion Prediction
With only three promotion places up for grabs once again in the League One 2024/25 season - two of which are determined automatically - the bid to reach the Championship is poised to be another dramatic challenge.
# | club | odds | bookmaker |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Birmingham City | 4/6 | Paddy Power - Place a Bet |
2 | Bolton Wanderers | 3/1 | LiveScore Bet - Place a Bet |
3 | Rotherham United | 7/2 | Paddy Power - Place a Bet |
4 | Huddersfield Town | 9/2 | Paddy Power - Place a Bet |
5 | Charlton Athletic | 5/1 | bet365 - Place a Bet |
6 | Peterborough United | 5/1 | bet365 - Place a Bet |
Overwhelming title favourites Birmingham City are the only odds-on team poised for promotion from League One during the 2024/25 season.
Successive play-off finishes have made Bolton Wanderers the second-favourites to achieve promotion into the Championship this season.
Closely behind are Rotherham United, another of last season’s relegated Championship teams, who have yo-yoed between the second tier and League One for the past six seasons now.
Rounding out the top four are Huddersfield Town, the third team to suffer the fateful drop into League One for this season.
Both Charlton Athletic and Peterborough United complete the top six names in the betting, level at the same pre-season odds for promotion from the division.
Relegation Prediction: Who will be relegated from League One?
League One has the smallest margin for error of any English football league, relegating four teams from the division each season. Bookmakers have installed Crawley Town as the favourites to enter League Two next season, which is no surprise after the Red Devils secured promotion through the play-offs following a seventh placed finish.
Three other clubs are also closely behind them in the betting: Shrewsbury Town, Cambridge United and Northampton Town. This trio were all existing League One clubs last season, finishing 19th, 18th and 14th respectively.
