Types of Football Betting Tips
When it comes to betting on the football, there are a lot of opinions out there; who should you listen to when your money’s on the line?
Here at Betting Odds, we’ve teamed up with a number of renowned football punters, sharing valuable insight on upcoming fixtures in the top European leagues and competitions and further afield. Our group of expert tipsters includes journalists, data analysts, podcast hosts, and full-time professional bettors – all providing our readers with that extra bit of nous when they come to make their betting predictions.
Our free football betting tips scale the entirety of the game, covering a number of popular markets. If you’re interested in having a punt across the football league or on any fixtures from abroad, check out our football betting tips for today page. Below are some of our most appreciated areas of expertise:
- Match Result – If you’re making your way in the world of football betting, this is probably the market to hit first: pick a home win, an away win, or a draw.
- Both Teams to Score – Often abbreviated to BTTS, this market is handy when two evenly matched sides with dangerous attacking players go head-to-head.
- Over/Under Goals – The over/under market is most popular in relation to goals, but it can also concern other statistics such as corners, cards, and more. You can select a number, then wager on whether the overall number of goals will be over or under that amount.
- Goalscorers – Simple: select any player on either side to score during the match.
- Correct Score – One of the trickiest markets to wager on, correct score punters must select precisely the right score at full-time.
- Player to be Carded – Select a player to be carded during the game. This is a particularly attractive in-play market when one player looks like they’re about to see red.
- Player Shots on Target – If the match is looking like a one-sided affair, you might want to select a player to have a number of chances in front of goal.
- Bet Builders – Fancy combining a number of different markets into one bet slip? Then you should consider bet builders – a customisable bet slip that rolls the odds from multiple selections under the same wager.
Popular Competitions We Cover in Our Football Betting Tips
Such is the popularity of football betting that you’ll find hundreds, possibly thousands, of matches to bet on at any one time. The scale of markets in this sport is astonishing: not only will you find comprehensive coverage of games all the way down to England’s fifth tier, but this depth is also matched for foreign leagues and competitions. Here are some of the most popular:
- Premier League – The best division in England, and for many people the best in the world. The Premier League season typically begins in August and ends in May, comprising the top 20 teams in the country. Each team plays the other 19 clubs home and away for a 38-match season.
- EFL – The English Football League refers to the next three divisions in the country: the Championship, League 1 and League 2. Again, seasons take place between August and May, but there are 24 teams in each of these divisions, so the season is 46 games long. The EFL is unique in the footballing world in that it includes playoffs, where qualifying teams compete for the last remaining promotion spot.
- FA Cup – The oldest cup competition in football, the FA Cup is revered for its David v Goliath contests. Every semi-professional club in the country has the right to play, throwing up some memorable cup ties over the years. Each round is a straight knockout, with replays organised in the event of a draw before the quarter-final stage.
- League Cup – England’s second domestic cup competition, the League Cup consists of knockout rounds until the semi-final, where ties are played over two legs.
- Champions League – Every season the highest-placed league finishers across Europe qualify for the Champions League – the biggest club competition in football. 32 teams qualify for the initial group stages, with the top two sides from each progressing to the knockout rounds where ties are played over two legs. Third-placed teams in their group will drop down into the Europa League.
- Europa League – The best of the rest will qualify for the Europa League, which follows the same format as the Champions League. The only difference is an extra knockout round, accommodating for the third-placed teams dropping in from the Champions League.
- Europa Conference League – A new European tournament, the Conference League mirrors the format of other European competitions. Third-placed finishers in the Europa League group stages will enter the Conference League knockout rounds.
- European Leagues – The other major European Leagues are Spain’s La Liga, Italy’s Serie A, Germany’s Bundesliga, France’s Ligue 1, Portugal’s Primeira Liga, and the Eredivisie in the Netherlands. All of these leagues follow a similar format to the Premier League, with matches played home and away.
- Scottish Premiership – The premier division in Scotland consists of 12 teams, with each team playing every opposition four times in a season. Celtic and Rangers dominate the SPFL.
- World Cup – The pinnacle of the sport, the World Cup takes place every four years following a two-year qualification campaign. The current format sees 32 nations competing in a group stage, before progressing to the knockout phase, though there are plans to expand the tournament to 48 teams. Lionel Messi completed football when he won the last World Cup for Argentina in 2022.
- European Championship – Crowning the champions of Europe is the Euros, which also takes place every four years. 24 countries take part, with four knockout places going to the best third-placed finishers in their respective groups. England lost to Italy on penalties in the final of the last tournament back in 2021.
- Women’s World Cup – The women’s World Cup copies the format of the men’s tournament, with 32 teams involved in group stages and knockout rounds. The USA is the most successful nation in the women’s game with four World Cup wins.
- Women’s European Championship – 16 nations compete for the women’s Euros – a competition dominated by Germany, who have won eight of 14 tournaments. England are the current champions however, winning the delayed 2022 edition on home soil.

Frequently Asked Questions On Football Betting Tips
We've compiled a list of questions that should help you understand the types of football tips featured on BettingOdds.com.
What types of football tips do you produce?
We don't like to restrict ourselves to particular types of bet when football tipping, but there are three specific types of tip we love to give our users:
- Shots on target tips - predicting a particular player to have one or more shots on target in the match.
- To be shown a card tips - predicting a particular player to be shown a card in the match.
- Anytime goal scorer tips - predicting a particular player to score a goal at any point in the match.
We'll also put up multi tips and bet builder's using the expertise we have on these particular bet type.
What odds are your football tips?
We aim to give our users a choice of odds when putting up a tip, so our football predictions will range in price from:
- Short odds up to 4/1
- Medium priced odds up to 12/1
- Longer prices up to over 100/1!
All of our football predictions are well studied and we publish the reasons why we're predicting the outcome.
What counts as a shot on target with the bookmakers?
It depends on what feed that betting site takes their football content from. Opta is very popular with the bookmakers and they define a shot on target as:
- any shot that goes into the net regardless of whether it was meant as a shot or not - e.g. a cross that goes in.
- any shot at goal that is saved by the goalkeeper which was definitely going in.
- a block by a player if they are the last line of defence and the keeper has no chance of saving.
Shots can be classified as with your foot or head. It's worth noting that sometimes there is a grey area as to whether a shot on target has been counted so it's worth keeping an eye on social media, especially @BettingOddsUK if it's a featured football tip on our site as we'll be watching the game like a hawk looking for the win!
What happens if my selection Anytime Scorer bet doesn't play in the match?
If your player doesn't take part in the match your bet will be voided by the online bookmaker and you'll get your stake returned. If your player comes on as a substitute and doesn't score your bet will be a loser, just as it will be if your player gets substituted having not scored. Whilst we aim to get our anytime scorer tip up as early as possible before a match, you may be best waiting until team news before placing your bet to check whether our selection is playing or not.
What is a Bet Builder tip?
A bet builder is a type of multiple bet where the bookmaker allows you to pick from markets on the same event and put them all together combining their odds. Most of the bookies featured on BettingOdds.com have a 'bet builder' type bet available for punters, although they may be called something different on their site. We've compiled a glossary to help you find your way around their sites:
- Bet365 - Bet Builder
- William Hill - #YourOdds
- Bet Victor - Bet Builder
What is the probability percentage?
At BettingOdds.com we're proud to be home of the Probability Percentage rating given to every odds on the site. This rating shows you exactly what percentage chance the bookmakers' give that selection of winning, simplifying how we present the odds and giving you a bit more understanding as to what they actually. mean. We also show the odds in traditional Fractional or Decimal form.
