Which Team to Bet On
There is plenty on the line in the 2023 Nations League finals. Netherlands, Spain, and Croatia will be desperate to atone for their mistakes at Qatar 2022, while success is even more important for Italy after failing to even qualify for the competition. We’ll explore each team in more detail below:
Netherlands
Fresh from narrowly losing in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals to eventual winners Argentina on penalties at the Lusail Stadium, the Netherlands were second only to Spain in the outright UEFA Nations League odds. The Oranje have gone from strength to strength under Ronald Koeman, with a solid defence marshalled by the ever-present Virgil Van Dijk and attacking prowess led by the likes of Cody Gakpo and Wout Weghorst.
The 2023 Nations League Finals hosts had been looking to put the perceived failures of the 2020/2021 event behind them, where they missed out on advancing to the final stage. The bookmakers certainly believed they have a shot at lifting the trophy, especially given the red-hot form of young starlets like Xavi Simons, however, a surprise 4-2 defeat to Croatia in the semi-finals put an an end to those plans.
Spain
Spain are widely acknowledged to have passed themselves to death in Qatar, with Luis Enrique opting for a Guardiola-esque approach by rarely fielding a recognised centre forward. The former Barcelona manager departed after the World Cup, so incoming coach Luis da le Fuente now has the chance to instil his own ideas.
Football betting fans are treated to a mouthwatering repeat of the 2021 Nations League Semi-Final as the Spaniards meet Italy once more. A Ferran Torres brace ruined the Azzuri’s remarkable 37-game unbeaten spree in October 2021, and the bookmakers are predicting La Roja to come out on top again. Much will depend on whether captain Alvaro Morata can find his scoring touch, although Marco Asensio, Dani Olmo, and Ansu Fati are other dynamic attackers that could make the difference.
Italy
Italy arguably have the most to play for considering their shocking failure to qualify for Qatar 2022. Roberto Mancini’s men had a remarkable fall from grace after edging England on penalties in the 2020 Euro’s Final. The Azzuri lost to Spain in the 2021 Nations League semi-finals only a few months later, a game that was the beginning of a steep decline after almost 40 games unbeaten.
Captain Leonardo Bonucci will be out for revenge against Spain this time, but without his legendary central defensive stalwart Giorgio Chiellini, the jury is out on whether Italy can regain their famous solidity. The bookmakers place them third on the list of outright UEFA Nations League betting odds, but anything is possible if the Italians find the internal fire to overcome a difficult few years.
Croatia
Croatia have reached the last four of the past two World Cups playing with their hearts firmly on their sleeves. For a country of just under four million people, the number of world-class players created is remarkable. With a famed midfield, notably including the seemingly anti-ageing Luka Modric, all approaching the twilight of their careers, the 2023 Nations League Finals may be the final chance for the Balkan nation to get their hands on an unprecedented international trophy.
Although the bookmakers tend to place Croatia at the bottom of the list of UEFA Nations League betting odds, you can never write off these underdogs that have consistently defied expectations. Manager Zlatko Dalic knows how to navigate an international knockout competition, and they’ve already knocked reigning champions France out of the competition in the group stages. Croatia have already improved on two relatively disappointing displays at the last Nations League by reaching the semi-finals for the first time and beating the home nation. Can they go another step further?
Nations League Betting Tips
Football betting can be extremely exciting, but you mustn’t get ahead of yourself. Responsible and successful gambling is all about learning the best tips and strategies so you don’t get caught out. You can never guarantee success, of course, but the following UEFA Nations League betting tactics can certainly help:
- Read our tips — The BettingOdds team is constantly optimising our betting approach to help you gain the best insights possible. Read our tips to help you understand the most effective wagering strategies, learn about teams or players, and find the best bookmakers to register with.
- Assess the odds for best prices — Odds can fluctuate from bookies to bookies. Before adding a prediction to your bet slip, check whether you can get a better price elsewhere.
- Research each team — Doing your research is an essential UEFA Nations League betting tip. Which player has been on a scoring run recently? Who has a certain bogey team? Is a manager known for chasing goals or shutting up shop? All of these things can help you place better wagers.
- Consider form — Momentum plays a huge part in football betting, so ensure you scrutinise team and player form before deciding on a prediction too fast.
- Look at past winners — Success often breeds more success. Checking the past winners and runners-up can help you take advantage of UEGA Nations League odds. International football often runs in slower cycles than at club level, with teams staying on top for several years at a time.
