Vuelta a Espana 2023 Odds: Jonas Vingegaard and Primoz Roglic top the betting
Famed for its brutal and unpredictable nature, the 78th edition of the Vuelta a Espana is jam-packed with star names, including three-time winner Primoz Roglic, defending champion Remco Evenepoel, Tour de France supremo Jonas Vingegaard, plus the likes of Sepp Kuss, Geraint Thomas, Juan Ayuso, and Enric Mas.
Following the conclusion of the first rest day, we've had an updated look at the General Classification odds and standings to see who is in the mix for Red Jersey glory.
Jonas Vingegaard: 7/4
Not just content with a brace of stunning wins in the Tour de France, cycling superstar Jonas Vingegaard is bidding to add La Vuelta to his collection.
The Dane's CV only contains one La Vuelta appearance, back in 2020 - as a Domestique to eventual winner Primoz Roglic - which was just before he propelled himself to the sport's summit: his 46th-place finish remains the only time he's finished outside the top-two at a Grand Tour.
He was the pre-race favourite and remains top of the betting at 7/4 as he bids to become only the second man since 1978 to win the double of the Tour de France and La Vuelta in the same year, highlighting how difficult this accomplishment is.
At the time of writing, Vingergaard is 7th in the standings, four seconds behind teammate Primoz Roglic and 2m 33s adrift of his other teammate Sepp Kuss.
Primoz Roglic: 7/4
Right alongside Vingegaard in the betting is his own Jumbo-Visma teammate Primoz Roglic, 7/4, who just so happens to be a three-time winner of La Vuelta.
The Slovenian's hat-trick of triumphs came between 2019 and 2021, while his quest for a record-equalling fourth success in 2022 was curtailed following a crash on Stage 16.
In his next Grand Tour, the Giro d'Italia, Roglic snatched victory from Brit Geraint Thomas on the penultimate stage following a dramatic time trial.
After not riding in the Tour de France, Roglic is in prime condition at La Vuelta, making a statement win on Stage 8 to put him 6th overall.
He absolutely loves it here with his experience, pedigree, and know-how likely to provide him with plenty of backers as the race heads into the second week.
Remco Evenepoel: 4/1
It would be a surprise if the winner didn't come from team Jumbo-Visma, whose biggest threat is last year's champion Remco Evenepoel (4/1).
The talented Belgian hoped to win back-to-back Tours, only to be struck down by Covid at this year's Giro d'Italia, a race he led after Stage 9.
Earlier this month the Belgian won the UCI Road World Championships, now he's testing himself over the course of a demanding three weeks against some of the best in the business.
After nine stages, the Stage 3 winner is 4th in the standings, seven seconds ahead of Roglic and 11 seconds ahead of Vingegaard.
Sepp Kuss: 10/1
The biggest mover in the market is race leader Sepp Kuss who is now priced at 10/1, down from 325/1 pre-race!
Kuss took victory on Stage 6 from a breakaway, then took the Red Jersey on Stage 8 with the American holding a 43 second lead over UAE's Marc Soler in second.
It will now be interesting to see how Jumbo-Visma operates going forward considering it was Kuss' teammates, Roglic and Vingegaard, who were expected to battle it out for glory.
There is still a long way to go of course as the team seeks an unprecedented third Grand Tour success of the year following their victories at the Giro d'Italia (Roglic) and the Tour de France (Vingegaard), but after playing an instrumental role in both of those wins, Kuss will hope his time has now come.
Juan Ayuso: 11/1
Talented youngster Juan Ayuso is 9th in the GC, 2m 43s off the lead but within touching distance of the likes of Evenepoel, Roglic, and Vingegaard.
Earlier this year the UAE star finished second behind Adam Yates at the Tour de Romandie and should continue to grow in confidence as the race develops meaning he's definitely one to keep an eye on.
Selected Others
Enric Mas has thrice finished as a runner-up at La Vuelta in 2018, 2021, and 2022. He's currently 8th in the GC but out at 40/1 to end the race victorious.
UAE teammates Marc Soler (2nd) and Joao Almeida (10th) can be backed at 100/1 and 66/1, while 2018 Tour de France champion Geraint Thomas is already 12m 34s off the lead which have effectively ended his hopes, reflected in his odds of 1000/1.
