Group A
Fri, 25th Nov - 16:00
Khalifa International Stadium, Al Rayyan
The Netherlands are favourites to win Group A and the favourites to win this match, but Ecuador will fancy themselves to qualify for the knockouts with the Dutch and a point against their rivals will be the aim.
The Netherlands qualified for the finals as Group G winners in European qualifying, winning seven of their 10 matches, losing just the once.
The young team breezed through their group stage of Euro 2021 with three wins before being knocked out by the Czech Republic in the last-16, and will be looking to go a further at the Qatar World Cup.
Ecuador qualified for the finals in fourth spot in South American qualifying behind Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. This is Ecuador's fourth appearance at World Cup finals and they will be bidding to equal their achievement of 2006 in Germany where they reached the round of 16, where they lost to England who could be a potential opponent in 2022.
The Dutch have a good young squad with the likes of captain Virgil van Dijk and Barcelona duo of Memphis Depay and Frenkie De Yong making up the spine of the team. They also have some young players who can make a mark in Qatar such as Donyell Malen who plays for Dortmund and the exciting Arnaut Danjuma who has been an integral part of Villarreal's run to the Champions League semi-finals in 2022.
A lot of the Ecuador players ply their trade in North and South America but there are a few players who have played in Europe such as Enner Valencia who is one of the more experienced players in what is a pretty young squad with a lot of the team having been involved in Ecuador's 2019 South American Youth Championship winning squad. Moises Caicedo currently plays for Brighton in the Premier League and will be one to watch in Qatar.
The two teams have played against each other twice before, with the Netherlands winning once and last time drawing 1-1 in 2014. This will be the first competitive match between the two.
