World Cup 2026 Knockout Stage Format
World Cup 2026 will feature an expanded knockout stage following the new 48-team format.
The top two teams from each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-placed sides, will advance to a Round of 32 for the first time in World Cup history.
From there, the tournament follows a straight knockout format: Round of 32, Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and then the final. If scores are level after 90 minutes, games go to extra time and, if needed, a penalty shootout to determine who progresses.
