Golden Glove Odds: The Main Contenders
Bookmakers are yet to release the Golden Glove odds market for World Cup 2026. In the meantime, we can speculate as to who could be in the running for the award:
Unai Simon (Spain)
Spain arrive at the World Cup among the favourites, and Unai Simón is firmly in the conversation in this market. The Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper was instrumental in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph and will be key to their chances of success this summer.
Jordan Pickford (England)
England’s undisputed No.1 is preparing for his fifth major tournament with the national team. A consistent and reliable presence between the sticks, Pickford has made numerous crucial saves, kept plenty of clean sheets, and thrived in penalty shootouts.
Emiliano Martinez (Argentina)
The reigning Golden Glove winner starred in Argentina’s World Cup 2022 triumph, producing a series of standout performances, including a dramatic late save in extra time of the final. Brimming with confidence and never shy to use mind games to his advantage, the Aston Villa keeper is set to be a major contender once again.
What is the Golden Glove?
While attack-minded players scrap it out for glory in the Top Goalscorer Odds, goalkeepers have their own prize in their sights: the Golden Glove Award.
Originated in 1994 and first known as the Lev Yashin Award - named after the Soviet goalkeeper - the award is handed to the most outstanding goalkeeper at the World Cup. Since 2010 it's been called the Golden Glove.
While the top scorer award is based on goals, the Golden Glove isn't necessarily given to the keeper with the most clean sheets - like the Premier League equivalent - or who conceded the fewest goals.
These categories are still obviously major factors in reaching a decision, which is the job of a FIFA Technical Study Group, who pick the keeper that they believe has played to the highest standard throughout the duration of the tournament. So, it can be a bit subjective.
Goalkeepers can also win the Golden Ball - as Oliver Kahn did in 2002 - which is awarded to the best overall player.
Former Golden Glove Winners
In eight editions we've seen eight different winners of the Golden Glove.
Five of the eight victors also won the World Cup at the same time, including 2022 victor 2022 Emiliano Martinez who lifted the World Cup trophy with Argentina.
- 1994: Michel Preud'homme (Belgium)
- 1998: Fabien Barthez (France)
- 2002: Oliver Kahn (Germany)
- 2006: Gianluigi Buffon (Italy)
- 2010: Iker Casillas (Spain)
- 2014: Manuel Neuer (Germany)
- 2018: Thibaut Courtois (Belgium)
- 2022: Emiliano Martinez (Argentina)

Frequently Asked Questions on the Golden Glove
What is the Golden Glove?
The Golden Glove award is given to the best goalkeeper at the World Cup.
How is it decided?
The FIFA Technical Study Group selects the best goalkeeper of the tournament, which is based on their performances throughout.
The winner of the award doesn't necessarily have to be from the winning team, or have kept the most clean sheets, or conceded the fewest goals - although obviously, these factors can help significantly.
