World number one Scottie Scheffler leads the chase and will enjoy a head start over all of his rivals - in some cases a ten-shot margin - but betting is not just available for who will be crowned champion at East Lake on Sunday.
There are also markets on which player scores the lowest 72-hole total in the four rounds, which provides another opportunity for golf punters to get involved in the campaign’s climax.
PGA Tour players often find it too tough to keep tabs on Scheffler on level terms, let alone when the world number one is given a head start, but Open champion Xander Schauffele is within touching distance and can claim this week’s big prize.
Schauffele starts the tournament two shots behind and has been showing great consistency this season, winning both the US PGA Championship and the Open and 15th place at the Scottish Open has been his worst finish in his last ten tournaments.
Even though he would have found it hard to boost his position in the FedEx standings at last week’s BMW Championship, he still finished fifth and can give the man who succeeded him as Olympic champion earlier this month a real run for his money.
Schauffele won at East Lake in 2017 and has finished in the top five in each of his last five visits. While the course has undergone significant renovations, he flourishes in these surroundings and can do so again this week.
Those looking for an each-way bet in the FedEx Cup market could be tempted to support Rory McIlroy, who finished 11th at last week’s BMW Championship.
The Northern Irishman has six shots to make up on Scheffler, which is a big ask, but he can get into the top three, particularly as one of his potential rivals for the place money, Hideki Matsuyama, withdrew last week with a back injury.
McIlroy has won three times at East Lake and while this week’s course represents a vastly different task, he will be comfortable in the surroundings and tends to revel in the Tour Championship format so we can expect a big performance.
Another player who looks set to shine is Australian Adam Scott, who appears to have a strong each-way chance in the 72-hole stroke play market.
Scott won at East Lake way back in 2006, but the fact he has made just two appearances since 2016 should not hold him back too much when the course changes are accounted for.
His recent form is encouraging as he was second last week and posted the same finishing position at the Scottish Open before finishing tenth at The Open.
The 2013 Masters winner has not won a tournament since the Genesis Invitational in 2020, but he could put in a bold showing this week.
