The Players Championship 2022: Odds on Every Player in the Field
All eyes will be on Sawgrass this week for the 2022 Players Championship and we've highlighted all of the odds for the tournament which tees off on Thursday.
The unofficial "5th major" sees a stellar cast and boasts a high quality field of all of the world's top players. Week three of the 'Florida Swing', following on from the Honda Classic and the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the PGA Tour is really ramping up ahead of the US Masters which takes place at Augusta next month.
The bookmakers have gone up early with their odds for this and we could also see some boosted place terms for the tournament, with Boylesports already gone a fifth of the odds 11 places at Sawgrass.
With so many top players in north Florida this week, the betting is really competitive and the early shows have the tournament as 14/1 bar.
Collin Morikawa is best priced 14/1 favourite with Bet365 and William Hill. The 25 year old hasn't played a heap of golf this year but when he does turn up he invariably finishes high up the field. Second in the Phoenix Open in his last start three weeks ago, the two-time major champion has only played Sawgrass once, which was last year when he finished down the field in 41st.
Co-favourite at the top of the betting is last year's winner Justin Thomas who has three top tens in his last four starts this year and a really good record here at Sawgrass. The American won by a shot from Lee Westwood here last year but has also finished third at the course plus an 11th, 24th and 35th finish from his six appearances, missing the cut just once.
Jon Rahm makes up the trio of best priced co-favourites with Bet365 at 14/1. The world number one has been pretty quiet by his standards this year although that still equates to six top 25 finishes in the last nine weeks and three top 10s. Rahm finished 9th here 12 months ago which was his best effort in four appearances at the course.
Betfair and Bet365 are best price Rory McIlroy this week who is the only other player in the top 30 or so in the betting who has won this tournament before. McIlroy faded away at the weekend in the Arnold Palmer, missing the cut here last season, he's four top 10s in his last 8 including the win in 2019 at Sawgrass. He's also the only player over 30 in the top eight in the betting. Golf is clearly becoming a young man's game!
Next in the betting comes Viktor Hovland at 20/1 with Bet365 and 888Sport. The Norwegian was touched off for second place at the weekend and has four top 5 finishes in his last five starts including a win in the Dubai Desert Classic in January on the DP World Tour. He missed the cut on his only appearance at Sawgrass.
Patrick Cantlay is a best price 25/1 and another who missed the cut here last year (SIX of the top 8 in the betting missed the cut here in 2021), in fact the American has two straight missed cuts at Sawgrass and yet to finish inside the top 20 in four attempts. He's a man in form though with four top 10s in his last five starts.
Also a best price 25/1 this week is Sunday's winner Scottie Scheffler who is available to back at that price with Bet365, Paddy Power, William Hill, 888Sport and Betfair. The Arnold Palmer was Scheffler's second win in three starts with a top 10 sandwiched in between and clearly in the form of his life.
The last player priced up under 30/1 this week is Xander Schauffele at 28/1. The Olympic gold medal winner in Japan last year was 3rd in the Phoenix Open four weeks ago, ever consistent but two straight missed cuts here following on from a second place finish in 2018 on debut.
There's a heap load of quality further down the betting and major winners in abundance in the shape of Hideki Matsuyama, Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka priced bigger than 30/1. In fact, given the form of Dustin Johnson has been quiet over the last 12 months and doesn't have a particularly strong record at Sawgrass. The 35/1 about his chances might still not make much appeal. The American has only one top 10 finish, 5th in 2019 to his name in his last 10 visits.
Matsuyama might make for some value at 30/1 given he has two top 10s here and already a winner in 2022, whilst Brooks Koepka looks a huge price given his competitiveness and given he finished third at the Phoenix Open in a strong field four weeks ago.
Daniel Berger has a good record at Sawgrass with two top 10s here including 9th last year. The American was 4th at the Honda Classic albeit letting a final round lead slip.
Tyrrell Hatton was second at the weekend his third top 10 in his last four starts but has missed the cut three times in a row at Sawgrass.
