What is the Ryder Cup format?
Unlike standard golf tournaments such as The Masters which are strokeplay events, The Ryder Cup is matchplay.
This is where players compete as pairs or individuals against the opposition team rather than the course. The player or pair with the lowest score wins the hole. A point is won when the player or pair's advantage is greater than the number of holes remaining. If it finishes level, the match is halved.
The Ryder Cup consists of two teams of 12 and on the first day there are four fourball matches as well as four foursomes matches. This format is then repeated on the second day of the event which is Saturday.
In foursomes, teammates hit alternative shots. Whereas in fourballs, each player has their own ball, with the lowest score winning the hole.
On the final day of The Ryder Cup, all 24 players are on the course with Sunday being singles day with 12 head-to-head matches. Winning a match earns your team a point, while a halved match is worth half a point for each team.
There are 28 points on offer in total, so both teams will be aiming to hit the magic 14-and-a-half mark which means they would lift the trophy.
