The wait is over and Ryder Cup week is finally here. Find below a full preview of the event and the best bets from our expert golf tipster Jamie Broadhurst.
Ryder Cup Day 1 Foursome Matches
On Thursday afternoon the pairings were announced for Friday's foursome matches with Tyrrell Hatton and Jon Rahm leading out Team Europe. The pair will take on Sam Burns and Scottie Scheffler in the first match of the day, which begins at 06:35 am BST. You can find below a list of all the pairings for Day 1 at the Ryder Cup.
- 06.35am BST: Rahm/Hatton vs Scheffler/Burns
- 06.50am BST: Aberg/Hovalnd vs Homa/Harman
- 07.05am BST: Lowry/Straka vs Fowler/Morikawa
- 07.20am BST: McIlroy/Fleetwood vs Schauffele/Cantlay
06.35am BST: Jon Rahm / Tyyrell Hatton vs Scottie Scheffler / Sam Burns
Jon Rahm and Tyyrell Hatton have been chalked-up as the even money (1/1) favourites in the first of the foursomes on Friday. Rahm has appeared in two previous renewals of the Ryder Cup, featuring in eight matches, of which he has won four, lost three and halved one. Hatton will be keen to erase Whistling Straits out his memory after the defeat in 2021. The Englishman was a member of Thomas Bjorn's side when Europe last lifted the trophy at Le Golf National.
For those looking to back the tie, 5/1 is available, with Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns priced at 5/4 to get the job done. Burns will be making his debut for the USA Ryder Cup side, while Scheffler will be hoping for a similar result to in 2021 when he managed a 4-and-3 singles win over Jon Rahm.
06.50am BST: Ludvig Aberg / Viktor Hovalnd vs Max Homa / Brian Harman
Ludvig Aberg and Viktor Hovland are the odds-on favourites to get the better of Max Homa and Brian Harman. After landing his first professional title at the Omega European Masters in Switzerland at the age of 23, Luke Donald decided to include Aberg as one of his captain's picks. The 23-year-old will partner Hovland who has been dynamite on the PGA tour in recent years, but did not enjoy the greatest of times at Whistling Straits: halving three and losing two of his matches.
The match being halved is once again on show at 5/1, while the duo of Homa and Harman can be backed at 11/8. Homa is one of four rookies for the USA and has collected 12 top-10 finishes on the PGA tour this season. Brian Harman is also making his first appearance in the Ryder Cup after a season which saw him lift the Claret Jug with a stunning performance at The Open Championship.
07.05am BST: Shane Lowry / Sepp Straka vs Rickie Fowler / Colin Morikawa
Shane Lowry and Sepp Straka are the longest price of any of the European pairings to get the win in the first round of foursomes, priced at 6/4 to do so. Those odds imply a 56% chance of success. Lowry will be relishing the chance to play in his first Ryder Cup on home soil after being made a captain's pick in the defeat in 2021. Straka managed a T-2 finish at the Open in July and arrives to make his debut as one of the four rookies for the European side.
5/1 is the price on the match being halved, with a win for Rickie Fowler and Colin Morikawa widely available at 4/5. Fowler will be representing the USA in his fifth Ryder Cup, although he doesn't boast the best of records with three matches won, seven lost, and five halved. Two time major winner Morikawa will look to channel his performances at Whistling Straits where he went 3-0-0 in foursomes and four-balls combined, in what will be his second Ryder Cup in Rome.
07.20am BST: Rory McIlroy / Tommy Fleetwood vs Xander Schauffele / Patrick Cantlay
This final match looks an absolute cracker, but also looks a tough one to call with Rory and Tommy priced at 11/10 for the win. McIlroy has featured in every Ryder Cup since 2010, playing 24 matches in total, with 12 wins, 12 losses and four matches being halved. Fleetwood arrives here in form after carding six top-10 finishes in his last eight starts. Nobody will ever forget the scenes after Moliwood won all four matches together in 2018 and he now makes his third straight appearance for team Europe.
Xander Schauffele boasted a record of 3-1-0 in his first appearance at a Ryder Cup two years ago and arrives here after managing 11 top-10's this season. Xander will be partnered by Patrick Cantlay who also featured in the victorious USA side that came out on top at Whistling Straits. The pair can be found at 5/4 in the match winner market, while the draw can be sided with at 5/1.
Ryder Cup 2023
The second of the two team competitions is up this week, and it is time for the men to try to live up to the standards of the Solheim last week.
This year will mark the 44th renewal of the Ryder Cup, and this year it is set to be played at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club. Unlike last week’s course, Finca Cortesin, we have seen the Marco Simone Golf course for the last three Italian Open’s on the DP World Tour. So, if we cast back to previous notes on the course, we can kind of paint a rough picture of how it will play out this week.
Format
The Ryder Cup is played over three days, with a different style of match play played each day.
- Friday Morning – 4 x Foursome matches
- Friday Afternoon – 4 x Fourball matches
- Saturday Morning – 4 x Foursome matches
- Saturday Afternoon – 4 x Fourball matches
- Sunday – 12 x Singles matches
Foursome matches (Alternate Shot)
This format is literally what it is called. Each player will take it in turns in the pair to hit different shots with the one ball. For example, the first player will tee off, the second player will then hit the second shot and then this will carry on until the hole is complete.
Fourball matches (Betterball)
In this format, each person in the group will play their own ball until the hole is complete. The player with the lowest score out of the pair will use their score on the scorecard.
Singles matches
Going into Sunday, the captains from each side will choose an order that their 12 golfers will go out in and this will then form the 12 matches. Tactics will definitely come into play here, so the captains need to choose their order carefully to spread the quality players throughout the list to keep up momentum throughout the matches.
Marco Simeone Golf & Country Club
- Par 71
- 7255 yards
- 4 x Par 3s – ranging from 150-222 yards
- 11 x Par 4s – ranging from 329-525 yards – 4 below 400 yards, 4 over 475 yards
- 3 x Par 5s - ranging from 546, 587 and 597 yards
- Long, thick Fescue rough
- Creeping Bentgrass greens
- Undulations throughout the course
- Massive greenside bunkering
The Marco Simone Golf & Country Club is not your typical Italian tree lined track. It is wide open to the elements and is set deep in the countryside just outside of Rome.
Being set in the countryside, the course is filled with vast undulations on both fairways and greens which players will have to hit in the right areas for sure if they want to hold them in regulation. Yes, there is a lack of trees this week unlike last week, however the thick Fescue Rough that surrounds these fairways will play tricky this week, especially if wet with some rain forecast this week. Missing the fairway this week will not be pretty and will most likely penalise the golfers at least one stroke as they attempt to navigate out of the rough/bunkers.
Putting will always be a massive factor in match play and this is the biggest stage of them all for these 24 players, with some rookies in the mix who will surely be feeling the nerves this week. The greens are mostly a fair size this week, with most of them meandering between deep bunkers. Avoiding these tricky bunkers is the play of the week and reading the numerous slopes correctly that lie on these fast bentgrass greens.

Ryder Cup Tips
Ryder Cup Selections
Three selections this week for you readers, one big outright bet and two from the side markets for either team, I will include what markets they are from in brackets next to the selections. 12pt in total like last week! Good luck to all.
Europe to win the Ryder Cup outright – 6/5 (6pts)
Ryder Cup record – L-W-L-W-W-W-L-W-W-W
Back the home team, back the guys in form, come on Europe! We have won seven of the last 10 Ryder Cups and included in that run there has been some unreal renewals, from Martin Kaymer rolling in the winning putt at the Miracle in Medinah in 2012, to the European onslaught in France in 2018 where Francesco Molinari went five points from five matches. Europe have always had the upper hand in recent Ryder Cups, mainly down to our ‘team morale’ being so good, compared to the American dressing room it has always been superior. With the home crowd this week, the players will be well up for this and I’m backing Europe to get the job done at 6/5.
Tyrrell Hatton Top European Point Scorer – 9/1 (3pts)
Recent Form – 2-MC-9-34-43-20-6
Ryder Cup Form – 2W-4L-1D
Tyrrell for top euro point scorer, bet it now. He has been super solid this year on both tours. He got all the way to the Tour Championships on the PGA Tour where he finished in a tie for 16th place in the FedEx Cup standings. In total he was top-10 seven times in 21 starts in America and just missed the one cut. 13th for Strokes Gained: Off the Tee, 12th for Strokes Gained: Tee2Green and 7th for Strokes Gained: Putting are his three highlights from the Tour last season. Very good numbers looking at the course layout this week.
I followed Tyrrell for a little while round the BMW PGA at Wentworth earlier in the month where he eventually finished in 2nd place. His Tee2Green and scrambling game was awesome and really looked tuned in, that really solidified his place in my preview for me on a course that demands a good drive to avoid danger on either side of the fairway, a lot like this week.
Xander Schauffele Top USA Point Scorer – 6/1 (3pts)
Recent Form – 1-8-24-17-42-19-10
Ryder Cup Form – 3W-1L-0D
Another guy that oozes consistency and does not do a hell of a lot wrong on the golf course at all. It is now 22 events played in the PGA Tour 2022/23 season for Xander, he has made all 22 cuts, had 11 top-10s and had two runner up finishes, along with an overall place of 2nd on the FedEx Cup standings.
The World number six has some outstanding stats from last season which makes him a fierce match player. 3rd for Strokes Gained: Total, 3rd for Strokes Gained: Approach, 9th for Strokes Gained: Tee2Green and 4th for Strokes Gained: Putting. Xander has improved his putting massively over the last 12 months and will really benefit from it in the match play format this week. Bet Xander to be king of the United States team this week.
