Best Film
- Oppenheimer (1/7)
- Poor Things (10/1)
- Anatomy of a Fall (10/1)
- Killers of the Flower Moon (12/1)
- The Holdovers (14/1)
With only five nominees compared to the Oscars' 10, the BAFTA Best Film race should be a lot more competitive, however, Oppenheimer has different ideas about that theory. The Christopher Nolan-directed biopic detailing American theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer's role in the creation of the atomic bomb received 13 nominations at the British Academy Film and Television Awards, as it did at the 2024 Academy Awards also. It's the odds-on frontrunner to claim the top prize at the 2024 awards which should help it build momentum for a Best Picture win at the Oscars.
Poor Things, which picked up the second-most noms with 11, proves a 10/1 shot in this category, alongside French film Anatomy of a Fall. Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon - the joint-third most nominated movie at the awards - and The Holdovers round out the shortlist for this category.
Best Director
- Christopher Nolan - Oppenheimer (1/12)
- Justine Triet - Anatomy of a Fall (10/1)
- Jonathan Glazer - The Zone of Interest (12/1)
- Bradley Cooper - Maestro (18/1)
- Andrew Haigh - All of Us Strangers (18/1)
- Alexander Payne - The Holdovers (20/1)
Six names make up the Best Director picture at the 2024 BAFTAs, but one name is dominating the conversation here and at the other major award shows. Second-time nominee Christopher Nolan, who missed out on picking up his first Oscar in 2018 for his work on Dunkirk to Guillermo Del Toro, is well fancied for both the Oscar and BAFTA this year. He is positioned as the huge odds-on favourite for success in this category, with the next closest in the betting being Anatomy of a Fall's Justine Triet - the sole female representative in the list.
The outlier here is Andrew Haigh, who directed Andrew Scott and Paul Mescal in the critically acclaimed All of Us Strangers - considered one of the Academy's major snubs at this year's Oscars. Another Brit, Jonathan Glazer, features in the betting, while two Americans, Bradley Cooper and Alexander Payne, round out the party of six.
Leading Actor
- Cillian Murphy - Oppenheimer (1/5)
- Paul Giamatti - The Holdovers (7/2)
- Bradley Cooper - Maestro (11/1)
- Barry Keoghan - Saltburn (28/1)
- Colman Domingo - Rustin (50/1)
- Teo Yoo - Past Lives (80/1)
Oppenheimer's expected dominance continues as Cillian Murphy is the leading contender to bring home the bacon for his portrayal of J. Robert Oppenheimer in this year's smash hit and critical darling. As is the case in this year's Best Actor race at the Oscars, Paul Giamatti is the strongest challenger to upsetting the odds as a 7/2 chance.
Saltburn's Barry Keoghan, a rising British star, and Teo Yoo of Past Lives fame, are two fresh nominees acknowledged for their performances in two 2023 films receiving a lot of attention among the public yet not garnering much awards love.
Leading Actress
- Emma Stone - Poor Things (8/15)
- Sandra Huller - Anatomy of a Fall (11/8)
- Carey Mulligan - Maestro (18/1)
- Vivian Oparah - Rye Lane (33/1)
- Barbie - Margot Robbie (33/1)
- Fantasia Barrino - The Color Purple (40/1)
Emma Stone tops the Leading Actress betting chart, installed as the 8/15 favourite for glory in February. The 35-year-old has previously won for her starring role in the 2016 musical La La Land and was nominated in the Supporting Actress category for her work in 2018's The Favourite, also from Poor Things writer-director Yorgis Lanthimos.
Sandra Huller is closely behind her as an 11/8 shot for Anatomy of a Fall, mirroring this year's Best Actress duel at the Academy Awards. A couple of names not heavily featured elsewhere, particularly having been excluded by the Academy, are Margot Robbie for her cinematic depiction of plastic doll Barbie (33/1), as well as Fantasia Barrino's turn as Celie in the 2023 adaptation of The Color Purple.
