US Masters 2022 Odds: Latest on Tiger Woods, Cam Smith, Dustin Johnson and Im after Round 1
One day down, three more to go.
The opening day of the 2022 Masters Tournament saw six players post scores in the 60s, a first ever South Korean leader at the tournament (after any round), Tiger Woods go under par, and a couple of the pre-tournament favourites struggle for consistency.
Below we check out the leaderboard, the odds, have a closer look at Tiger, and round things off with the tee times for Friday...
How’s the leaderboard looking?
In as the early frontrunner after Day 1 we have Sung-Jae Im who tops the leaderboard following a glorious five-under 67. The South Korean, who finished runner-up in 2020, carded four birdies as well as a delightful eagle on the 13th.
Starting with a double bogey and ending with a double bogey rarely makes for a great round of golf, except if you’re Cam Smith who whipped up some beautiful putts in between to end on -4 to take second spot after the first round.
We then have four players a further shot behind on -3. This includes former Masters champions Danny Willett and Dustin Johnson, as well as No.1 Scottie Scheffler, while Corey Conners, Patrick Cantlay, and Jason Kokrak all locked on -2.
There are a host of players tied on -1, most prominently of which is a certain Tiger Woods who despite not playing competitively since 2020, produced a superb round to end the day one under par - more on him in a moment.
A shout-out to Lee Westwood who ended on evens, alongside ex-winners Sergio Garcia and Hideki Matsuyama, and ahead of the likes of Rory McIlroy (+1), John Rahm and Jordan Spieth (both +2), while many people’s fancy this week, Justin Thomas, needs to bounce back after carding a 76.
How did Tiger Woods get on?
As briefly touched on, Woods enjoyed a fine start back at one of his favoured stomping grounds, with his -1 score putting the five-time Masters champ joint 10th on the leaderboard - just 14 months after a car crash which left his future in the game in doubt.
Woods, enrobed in a brilliant pink shirt, was roared on by a plethora of passionate patrons and will now look to back up that showing with another positive performance on Friday.
"There is a long way to go, it is a marathon, but it is nice to get off to a positive start," Woods said after an opening round which included three birdies.
What are the odds saying?
Players Champion Cam Smith is on absolute fire at the moment as he looks to back up his Sawgrass success by donning the Green Jacket. Smith, 16/1 before the tournament, now leads the betting with most bookmakers at 11/2.
The Aussie is swiftly followed by 2020 winner Dustin Johnson and World No.1 Scottie Scheffler at 7/1, and early frontrunner Sung-Jae Im (66/1 into 9/1) ahead of Patrick Cantlay (12/1), Joaquin Niemann (16/1), as well as Viktor Hovland and Correy Conners (25/1).
Runner-up on his debut last year, Will Zalatoris can currently be backed at 28/1 after posting 71 on Thursday. Then there’s Matthew Fitzpatrick, John Rahm, and Rory McIlroy at 33/1.
Hovering at the 50/1 mark earlier in the week, Woods can still be backed around 40/1 as he seeks Masters triumph No.6.
Impressive on Day 1, there’s Willett at 66/1, while Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, and Sergi Garcia are all three-figure prices.
