For all of County's dominance at The Mornflake Stadium, the hosts had them rattled. Derby's 32 shots and 72% possession ultimately proved insignificant after two late goals helped the visitors avoid a devastating first round exit to League Two opposition.
Alexandra were clinical and almost executed the perfect game plan in the previous tie, with six of their seven shots finding the target and Crewe finding themselves 2-0 up inside 54 minutes. That was before Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and Conor Hourihane notched in the 89th and 94th minute to ensure these teams would meet again at Pride Park just over a week later.
Derby County vs Crewe Alexandra Tips
County blew through Barnsley at Pride Park over the weekend and they'll be taking no prisoners when Crewe make the visit on Tuesday. We expect Derby to avoid their Cheshire-based shortcomings by selecting a stronger team in the hopes of getting the job done early.
More firepower in this team should be decisive in splitting the two apart, but that doesn't mean Crewe won't land any punches themselves. A strong 1-0 home win over Notts County last Saturday means Alexandra have scored in each of their last six outings, including those two against Paul Warne's side.
They should be able to generate a similar number of opportunities on Derby's patch as they did their own, and with County likely irritable based on that first head-to-head, Lee Bell's men can fire themselves onto the scoresheet in a Derby win in this second encounter.
Derby skipper Conor Hourihane has assumed a deeper-lying role between the defence and higher midfield line, but make no mistake, he's never lost that appetite for goals.
The EFL bagsman, who has played in all five tiers of the English professional pyramid, has 92 goals in 560 appearances across six different clubs, signing up for Derby's plight into League One in 2022.
That 90+4' equaliser marked his 10th strike for County and his third this season following two goals in League One in the opening six fixtures of the campaign.
Hourihane has always been the man to provide his team with a goal when they most need it and we can see him delivering on that promise once again this week. With Derby expected to beat Crewe by a significant margin according to their 4/11 price in the match result market and number of other players too short in the anytime goalscorer market, the Irishman is a good man to side with down this path.
