Cheltenham Gold Cup Tips
On Thursday we found out that neither Shiskin or Hewick will run in the Gold Cup on Friday, much to the disappointment of many National Hunt enthusiasts. As a result there is every chance that Galopin Des Champs may be sent off as the odds-on favourite for the race that begins at 3:30pm.
Cast your minds back 12 months and Galopin Des Champs was a seventh length winner of the Gold Cup, putting in a classy display to the delight of punters as he was sent off the 7/5 favourite. Since then he has been beaten twice, but was back in the winners enclosure when last seen winning the Irish Gold Cup at the Dublin Racing Festival.
Fastorslow can be backed at around 9/2 with most firms and he was unlucky at Cheltenham last year when running a strong race in the Ultima. Since then he has got the better of Galopin Des Champs twice and will be out for revenge here after the Irish Gold Cup defeat. Martin Brassil’s horse has since had a wind operation and arrives here with nothing to fear after his season so far.
Gerri Colombe is the first horse in the market at a double figure price, with some bookmakers go 10/1 that he can land the big prize for jockey Jack Kennedy. Sent off the 5/4 favourite for the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase last year, he couldn’t quite run down The Real Whacker up Cheltenham Hill, losing by a nose. He’s a strong stayer and a test of stamina may well suit in testing conditions.
L’Homme Presse has attracted some early attention in the markets and is now being offered at 11/1, with several bookmakers going 4 places each-way. Venetia Williams’ 9-year-old has only ever had two runs at this venue but has finished first past the finishing post on both occasions. The first of those was the Dipper Novices’ Chase in 2022, before three and a half months later rocking up and landing the Brown Advisory.
At 16/1 is Grand National winner Corach Rambler for Derek Fox and Lucinda Russell. A winner of the Ultima back in 2022 before claiming Aintree’s biggest race in style last year, he could well be unexposed and I can very much see him running a massive race here!
Verdict
- Galopin Des Champs Win @ Evens
- Corach Rambler each-way @ 16/1 - 4 places
The reversed form with Fastorslow being beaten in the Irish Gold Cup is really the standout clue in this race. Willie Mullins has been in strong form throughout the week and with Hewick and Shiskin pulled out of the race, Galopin’s chances of back-to-back wins. His trainer did so with Al Boum Photo in 2020 and I fancy him to do so again here with by far the most talented horse in the race.
