Group A, Sun, 20th Nov 16:00, Al Bayt Stadium, Al Khor
The 2022 World Cup opened up on Sunday 20th November at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor (4pm) in a game which saw hosts Qatar lose 2-0 to South American side Ecuador.
Qatar enter this tournament with the hopes of the country on their backs. They are top priced 500/1 to win the tournament and are managed by Spaniard Félix Sánchez.
Worldwide, very few people will give the hosts much of a chance to qualify from this tough group but they have had some really encouraging results in their preparation for this tournament.
They captured the 2019 Asian Cup which was their first ever major tournament title and made it to the semi final of the CONCACAF Gold Cup.
250/1 shots Ecuador are managed by Argentine Gustavo Alfaro and finished fourth in the South American qualifying behind Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay. They will be competing in the World Cup for the fourth time and have only once made it from the group stage, back in 2006 and will be hoping to match that here.
With the Netherlands looming in their second game, Ecuador will need to get off to a good start in beating Qatar.
