Germany vs Portugal Preview
With the engraving on the Champions League trophy barely etched to signal the end of club football for the season, attention turns to the internationals as this week sees the Nations League competition draw to a close in Germany.
Hosts Germany will be hoping to lift the trophy on home soil and will be confident of doing so having beaten Portugal in each of the last five meetings.
Portugal needed extra-time to make it to this stage but with this possibly being Cristiano Ronaldo’s last tournament for his nation, they’ll have extra motivation to go all the way.
Germany vs Portugal Tips
Moving into his 30s, Bernardo Silva is beginning to be deployed more regularly for both club and country in a deeper central role that requires less speed and endurance. This has meant that his defensive responsibilities have increased, and as a result, he’s made three tackles in both of his last two starts for Portugal. Since the start of 2025, he’s averaged 2.56 tackles per 90 for Man City and if we narrow that data down to games when he’s been central, he’s made at least two tackles in 13 of his last 17 domestic starts.
In Nations League action during this campaign, Germany have drawn 15.13 tackles per game with most visitors to German waters making at least 17. If Silva is played deep again, he’ll likely have to deal with Leroy Sane and Florian Wirtz who between them have drawn 3.66 tackles per 90 in the competition this season.
Across the hosts last four Nations League matches, opposition central midfielders have been forced into 15 tackles with five separate players in the middle of the park making at least two. Silva has shown that he’s capable of big numbers and is growing into this new role, so he looks well set to add to that list.
One thing we can expect from this game is for it to be open with these sides the top scorers in the competition.
Portugal will need to go on the offensive if they’re to have any chance of progressing and their average of 16.25 shots per game has meant that their opponents have been required to take 9.38 goal kicks per game with over five in six of their last seven games.
For all their dominance, Germany themselves have taken bang on six goal kicks per game with this part of our bet landing in six of their last seven too.
If we’re expecting Portugal shots, we can reasonably assume that German goalkeeper ter Stegen will be made to work and his average of 2.25 saves per game in this tournament further supports this.
Julian Nagelsmann’s side were dominant in the group stages but across their last four matches, ter Stegen has been forced into action 14 times.
Portugal’s opponents have averaged four saves per game with them needing at least two in all but one of their games and with them likely to be behind, we can expect them to be shooting on sight and we just need a few to find the target to land our Bet Builder.
Germany vs Portugal Team News
Germany are expected to welcome back keeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but the hosts will be without Kai Havertz, Antonio Rudiger, Nico Schlotterbeck, and Jamal Musiala.
Portugal will be without Geovany Quenda.
