History tells us that UEFA clubs have dominated the FIFA Club World Cup, producing 14 winners from the 18 editions to date. The last nine winners have all been from Europe, including Chelsea last time out, with Thomas Tuchel’s men beating Brazilian outfit Palmeiras in last year’s Final.
With this in mind, when it comes to the outright betting market, expect to see the European representative at a short price. They also have the added advantage of not featuring in the early rounds, instead entering at the semi-final stage, alongside the South American representative. Meanwhile, a club entering at the first round would have to play - and win - four matches as opposed to just two.
The last non-European club winner dates back to 2012, when Brazil’s Corinthians triumphed over Chelsea, although it’s worth noting that that two of the last three Finals have gone to extra-time with Flamengo and Palmeiras pushing Liverpool and Chelsea all the way. Outside of Europe and South America, no other continental confederation has ever produced a winner.
As always, it’s worth doing some background research on the clubs you may be less familiar with.
