Match Preview: Germany vs Hungary
Germany and Hungary will hope to head into the second round of Euro 2024 group stage fixtures on the back of a win from their respective opening games: Germany thrashed Scotland 5-1, and Hungary lost 3-1 to Switzerland.
After a stuttering start under manager Julian Nagelsmann, Germany found their groove in the build-up to Euro 2024 following wins over France, Netherlands and Greece, plus a draw against Ukraine. Yet, Germany know first-hand just how tough an opponent Hungary can be.
The teams drew 2-2 in the final group stage match of Euro 2020, then they drew 1-1 in the Nations League, followed by a surprise 1-0 Hungary win in Germany. The Hungarians also completed a memorable Nations League double over England, with whom they stunned 4-0 at Wembley, and were defeated in just one of their 16 matches leading up to Euro 2024.
Hungary excel as a collective unit but possesses star power in Liverpool's Dominik Szoboszlai, who scored four goals in qualifying. Meanwhile, Germany's team is brimming with talent and experience, from goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and centre-back Antonio Rudiger to the midfield duo of Ilkay Gundogan and Toni Kroos, while Kai Havertz will likely be favoured again up front.
The Best Betting Markets for Germany vs Hungary
Germany are the red-hot favourites in the match betting, but I don't think this contest will be as straightforward as the bookmakers suggest.
Hungary are both tactically astute and difficult to beat. Not only did they go undefeated in qualifying but they've only lost twice - to Italy and Switzerland - since September 2022 and have a win and two draws from their last three clashes against Germany; which includes a 1-0 win in Germany.
Both teams to score is available at an attractive 12/5.
