Belgium vs Slovakia Match Preview
Belgium and Slovakia have only faced off three times in their history. All three of those encounters have been friendly internationals, with the first of those being 22 years ago in a 1-1 stalemate in Brussels. It would be another four years before their next meeting, however the scoreline was repeated with another draw after a goal for each side. The most recent game between Belgium and Slovakia was in 2013. An Eden Hazard penalty opened the scoring, before a 91st minute Dries Mertens winner gave his side a late win after Richard Lasik had opened the scoring.
In February 2023 Domenico Tedesco replaced Roberto Martinez as Belgium manager. The new boss is yet to lose a match since his appointment and he saw his side top their qualifying group, taking 20 points from a possible 24. We may have seen the best of Belgium’s golden generation but Kevin De Bruyne remains a world class asset who captains both his national and club side.
One of the best providers of goals in the history of the game, De Bruyne can put a ball on a six-pence and after representing Belgium at five major tournaments, his experience will be vital if his side are to go deep into the competition.
Slovakia will have been delighted with their qualifying campaign which saw them finish second and accrue 22 points (W7 D1 L2). They did, however, lose twice to Portugal which is worrying when they have been handed a tough group at the tournament which includes Belgium, Ukraine and Romania.
With Ondrej Duda in midfield and their captain Juraj Kucka, Slovakia do have some incredibly talented players, but they will be without their strongest player over the last decade, Marek Hamsik who retired back in 2023. If they are to advance from this tricky looking group, Slovakia will have to defy the odds and cause a couple of shocks.
The Best Betting Markets for Belgium vs Slovakia
Slovakia performed well throughout qualifying for the European Championships but they may well come unstuck against the calibre of this Belgium side who are the short-priced favourites to top the group.
The Red Devils have not tasted defeat across all formats since 2022 and at 1/2 in the match result market they look a very backable price.
However, many punters will be looking for something at slightly longer odds, and we therefore think the match handicap is worth considering. Belgium -1, meaning they need to win the game by two or more goals for this bet to click, is available at 11/8. For those who believe in a really convincing win for Belgium, we'd recommend the -2 handicap at 7/2, meaning they need to win the game by three or more goals.
