Match Preview: Austria vs France
Off the back of their 2018 World Cup triumph, France endured a disappointing Euro 2020, winning just one group game before coming unstuck in the last-16 against Switzerland. They responded with a journey to another World Cup final, where they lost a thriller on penalties to Argentina, now they head into Euro 2024 as the second favourites - behind England - following an effortless qualifying campaign.
Like at Euro 2020 - where they faced Germany, Portugal, and Hungary - France have once again been dropped in a thorny group containing the Netherlands, Poland, and opening opponents Austria. However, it would be a huge shock if Les Bleus faltered in the opening stage given their experience and outrageous abundance of world class talent, including star man Kylian Mbappe who fired in nine goals during qualifying.
It's no surprise to see that France are the odds-on favourites to beat Austria in their opening match. Still, they will be more than wary of facing a side that narrowly lost to eventual winners Italy in the last-16 at Euro 2020, then proceeded to push Belgium in qualifying (W6 D1 L1) for Euro 2024.
Austria head into the tournament with 12 wins from their last 16 matches, including two stand-out 2-0 victories over Germany and Italy. They also have the added boost of having their manager, Ralf Rangnick, reject an offer from Bayern Munich.
The Best Betting Markets for Austria vs France
Austria should provide France with a stern test in this intriguing Group D clash, as they did when the countries met in the Nations League two years ago (1-1). Under boss Ralf Rangnick they have evolved into a confident, entertaining, and difficult-to-beat unit who have suffered just one defeat in 14 matches. This makes a draw a tempting bet at 18/5.
France enjoyed a dominant qualifying campaign, but were held to a 2-2 draw in their final game against Greece and have since lost to Germany (0-2) and been pushed all the way by Chile in a narrow 3-2 win. I can see a few goals in this one. Austria's significant improvement under Rangnick, combined with France's attacking excellent nudges me in the direction of a 2-2 draw at an appealing 16/1.
