Wimbledon Day 8 Betting Tips: Rafa Nadal and Nick Kyrgios feature in Monday's tennis treble
The second week of Wimbledon begins today (Monday) and if it’s anything like the first half of matches, we’re in for a treat.
So far we have seen early exits from some of the big dogs on the men’s and women’s side. We’ve already had to say goodbye to Carlos Alcaraz, Andy Murray, Iga Swiatek, Cori Gauff, and many other players that were pretty short in the betting order.
There are still a few big dogs left though, one of them being Nick Kyrgios who featured in one of the games of the year against bitter rival Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Despite dropping the first set the Australian came back to win 3-1 in a game that provided us with a bit of everything. Tsitsipas almost got defaulted after the Greek clearly aimed to hit Nick with the ball at the net.
It's Kyrgios will actually get us started for today's tips...
Wimbledon Day 8 Tips
- Brandon Nakashima vs Nick Kyrgios - Kyrgios to win in straight sets
- Botic Van De Zandschulp vs Rafael Nadal - Van De Zandschulp to win a set
- Alize Cornet v Ajla Tomljanovic - Tomljanovic to win
Brandon Nakashima vs Nick Kyrgios - Kyrgios to win in straight sets
Coming into Wimbledon everyone knew how good Kyrgios is on the grass surface, but he’s often let himself get in the way of claiming his first singles Grand Slam.
Whilst he may still be right in the middle of the drama, he’s certainly not letting it hinder his tennis. The performance he put on against the ranked number five Tsitsipas was at an incredibly high level and if he puts on a performance anywhere close to that against his next opponent, Brandon Nakashima, then he’s probably going to have a pretty easy day at the office.
Nakashima is by no means a bad player at all but the level Nick is at on the grass surface is frightening. His fast game is just exactly what he’s looking for at the moment and he’s just straight-up bullying some players on the court with his powerful tennis.
Nakashima has actually quite enjoyed the grass season so far and has recorded 10 wins on the surface since it began. The only thing is, some of those have been against much lesser opponents in challenger events, whereas Kyrgios is still going at it with the best in the business and making it look easy where he wants.
I think Nakashima is going to have some decent tournament runs in the future given he is only 20-years-old but I do not think he currently poses a threat to one of the best grass-court players in the world and I think he really might fold under the pressure of his deepest Grand Slam run. Kyrgios is currently priced at 29/20 to win this in straight sets, and I can’t see him being in any danger this match.
Botic Van De Zandschulp vs Rafael Nadal - Van De Zandschulp to win a set
Next up we have the privilege of watching Rafael Nadal yet again at a Grand Slam. The Spaniard is still yet to lose a single match at Grand Slam level this year and he heads into his next round against Botic Van de Zandschulp with all intentions of maintaining that perfect record.
Van de Zandschulp has established himself as a real problem for the top players on the tour over the last two years or so and he’ll be looking at making an even bigger name for himself in this match, and I do fully believe he can cause Nadal some serious troubles this game. Nadal’s wins have not come easy so far at Wimbledon and whilst he his still delivering time and time again, he doesn’t like doing it the easy way. Rafa has dropped a set in two of his three games so far at SW19 and was close to going to a deciding set against Cerundolo in his first-round matchup.
The grass has never been close to Nadal’s favourite surface but he's made it work in his favour in the past. However, this time I do genuinely believe he is struggling a little bit and Van de Zandschulp can give him quite a few problems to think about. He's a huge server and has some serious power behind a lot of his strokes, two traits that go very far at Wimbledon. Nadal is currently a 1/8 favourite for this match and I do expect him to find a way as usual to win it, but I don't think it's going to be easy for him. You can currently get 4/5 (William Hill) for Botic to take a set off him, something has has landed in 2/3 of Nadal's games at Wimbledon so far. I think that's extremely backable with Van de Zandschulp's recent showings on grass.
Alize Cornet v Ajla Tomljanovic - Ajla Tomljanovic to win
And our final pick for Monday's action comes from the women's side where Alize Corner faces Ajla Tomljanovic.
Alize Cornet shocked the tennis world in her last game after she managed to pull off a straight set victory against the ranked number one Iga Swiatek: stopping the longest winning streak the tour has seen in the last 25 years. Cornet came in as a 4/1 underdog that day but watching the game, you wouldn't have thought it. Swiatek hit a whopping 33 unforced errors in their two set match, averaging out at 1.77 unforced errors a game.
Cornet now comes in as the 8/11 favourite following this result which I don't think is entirely deserved. Unfortunately Cornet is infamous for failing to deliver on the Grand Slam stage and she has a tough matchup against Tomljanovic to get past. The 29-year-old managed to reach the quarter-finals last year at Wimbledon and is off to a great start this time recording wins over Teichmann, Harrison and Krejcikova. Her H2H matchup against Cornet is currently at two wins a piece with the last one coming as a win for Tomljanovic at Wimbledon.
I just can't really see why Cornet is the odds-on favourite coming into this matchup. In my eyes this is a pure 50/50 matchup, so I think we should be backing the underdog in the betting. You can get 11/10 for a win for Tomljanovic, which considering their last meeting at the same tournament went her way, represents some solid value.
That also concludes our treble which is just under 8/1 with William Hill.
