Iga Swiatek vs Jasmine Paolini Tips
Iga Swiatek has had a very comfortable two weeks, apart from one match. She started off her campaign with a breadstick, beating Leolia JeanJean 6-1 6-2 in typical Iga-fashion. Her second round proved to be one of her toughest tests in the past few years at the French Open, where she faced Naomi Osaka who has just recently made a comeback. The odds were stacked against the former Grand Slam winner, but after losing a tight tie break set, she won the second set with ease 6-1 and had Iga Swiatek on the ropes!
Naomi Osaka even had match points in the third set, but Iga Swiatek managed to come back and win the final set 7-5, securing her place in the third round. After that, it was routine stuff for the woman from Poland. She handed out three bagels, and didn't drop more than six games in her next four matches. She beat Maria Bouzkova, Anastasia Potapova, Marketa Vondrousova and Coco Gauff.
Now let's move onto Jasmine Paolini, who reached her first ever Grand Slam final after defeating Russia's Mirra Andreeva on Thursday night, thrashing the youngster 6-3 6-1. She became the first Italian woman to reach a Grand Slam final in nine years. This win isn't just huge for the fact it's her first final, but her ranking after this weekend will shoot up to a career-high of number seven even if she loses, breaking into the top 10 for the first time in her career.
Jasmine Paolini started off her campaign with a solid victory over Australia's Daria Saville, where she had a routine 6-3 6-4 win. She progressed in straight sets against American Hailey Baptiste, and then had her first real problems in Paris. She faced Bianca Andreescu, who surprised a few after winning her first couple of matches for the first time since August 2023 due to injury.
She then gave the Italian a run for her money, where she dropped the second set 6-3 but then managed to bagel the Canadian in the third set. Jasmine Paolini seemed to enjoy those bagels, and did it again against Elina Avanesyan after she lost the initial set but managed to come back winning 4-6 6-0 6-1. Her true test was against Elena Rybakina, where she was a big underdog, but she managed to pull through, and win in three sets.
Paolini now has her toughest test yet, facing the Queen of Clay, Iga Swiatek. The pair have only faced each other twice, once in Poland in 2018 and the other time in 2022 at the US Open. Iga Swiatek won both with ease. I think we'll see something similar again. I see the under games having some value here.
