The Favourites
Scottie Scheffler - 7/1
Defending champion and current world number one Scottie Scheffler will be looking to follow up his stunning display last year with another victory this time round at Augusta. However, punters should be aware that since The Masters began back in 1934, only three players have ever won back-to-back renewals (Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo and Jack Nicklaus)
Furthermore, only one defending champion since 2007 has managed a top-10 finish the following year. A dominant display at the Players Championship in March saw Scheffler win by five strokes and it’s fair to say that he is well fancied to go well again this week with just 7/1 on show from most betting sites.
Rory McIlroy - 7/1
Scheffler is not alone at the head of the market, with some firms making Rory Mcllroy the joint favourite to finally claim that green jacket. It’s now been nine years since Rory last won a major and a win this week would see him become only the sixth player in history to collect all four majors in their career.
Last year, Rory shot a 73 in his first and second round, but came back to remarkably finish second! The chip-in from the bunker at the 18th will be fondly remembered, and after seven top-10’s in his last nine visits to Augusta, he has one of the strongest records at this venue.
Jon Rahm - 9/1
Big Jon Rahm comes next in the betting at 9/1. It’s also worth pointing out that some bookmakers such as Betfair are paying as many as 12 places each-way at Augusta, while others such as Paddy Power have 10 places available.
Rahm also has a strong record at Augusta with four top-10 finishes in the last five years. Fifth is the best position that the Spaniard has finished and earlier this season he landed five wins in eight starts on the PGA tour. Rahm’s only major win came at one of his favourite courses, Torrey Pines. It’s not been an ideal preparation for The Masters after withdrawing from The Players Championship due to illness and we think he looks a little short at a single-figure price.
Jordan Spieth - 16/1
On his first three visits to Augusta, Jordan Spieth managed two seconds and a first place. That win in Georgia came back in 2015 and he was close to following that up with another victory the following year only for Sheffield’s Danny Willet to put on that green jacket.
Spieth is yet to win on tour this year but confidence is high coming into this event. The major question mark is can he still find enough to beat the ‘big-three’ who are ahead of him in the betting. It’s now six years since Speith won The Masters and he would prove a popular winner if he can produce a showing like that again.
Patrick Cantlay - 18/1
A player with tons of ability, Patrick Cantlay has made six visits to Augusta National in his career. His best finish here came back in 2019 when he finished 9th, notably shooting 64 in his third round, showing that he can go low here.
Cantlay has often struggled in majors but has been a prolific winner on the PGA Tour. His long game looks in great shape at the moment, although with 11 of his 20 rounds at Augusta being over par, we’d be reluctant to take the 18/1 that is currently on offer at the time of writing.
