SPOTY Odds: Beth Mead the new favourite to win 2022 award

Beth Mead was once again on the scoresheet for England on Tuesday evening as the Lionesses swept away Sweden by four goals to nil, to book their place in the European Championships final on Sunday.
Mead has been one of the stand-out players in the competition so far, and her goal last night takes her tally to six in the tournament. The 27-year-old is the current top scorer at Euro 2022 and as a result her price has been slashed in the Sports Personality of the Year market.
Before a ball was kicked at the women's Euros, William Hill had the 27 year-old priced at 50/1 in the SPOTY market, but after a string of strong performances and a flurry of bets, she has been cut into favouritism.
Paddy Power, bet365, BetVictor and several other firms all go 11/4 for Mead to be crowned the winner of the Sports Personality award in December. Those odds imply a 26.7% chance of the forward, who plays her club football for Arsenal, lifting the award in five months time, with the odds expected to shorten even more, should England go on to win the final on Sunday. Mead also needs just one more goal to break Inka Grings’ record of six in a single Euros tournament, which came back in 2009 for Germany.
Ronnie O’Sullivan had been the previous favourite in the market after winning his seventh World Championship snooker title at the start of May. After Tuesday’s performance by Mead & Co, the Rocket has now been pushed out to a general 4/1, with SBK going top-price at 29/5.
Jake Wightman comes next in the betting and is another who has seen his SPOTY price contract in recent weeks. The middle-distance winner won the Gold medal in the 2022 World Athletics Championships and is the first British global gold medal winner at a middle-distance event since Sebastian Coe at the 1984 Olympics.
Harry Kane then comes next in the market, and is 12/1 with most firms. Kane is just three goals behind Wayne Rooney in the England all-time top scorer charts and could well break the record at the World Cup in Qatar.
Tyson Fury has previously asked to be taken off the SPOTY shortlist, and looks rather short at 14/1. US Open winner Matt Fitzpatrick rounds off those towards the top of the market at a general 22/1.
