Runners-up in 1993 and 2001, a new-look Mexico will be looking to go one better in the Copa America this summer after being absent from the competition since 2016.
Coincidentally, 2016 was also the last time Jamaica competed in the tournament, replicating their poor efforts from the previous year by losing all three of their group games and crashing out at the first hurdle.
The two have been drawn alongside Ecuador and Venezuela in Group B this time around, and both will be keen to make a winning start in a competitive section.
There will be plenty of stars on show in Texas and an intriguing game could unfold on Sunday morning.
Mexico vs Jamaica Tips
Mexico will be feeling confident ahead of this tie having avoided defeat in their last five meetings with Jamaica, but this is a steadily improving Reggae Boyz side and they could hold their own in Texas.
Heimir Hallgrímsson’s men are unbeaten in their last seven matches, beating Canada and taking the USA to extra-time in that run, and finished third in the 2023 Concacaf Gold Cup.
They have a slew of talented attackers, most notably West Ham’s Michail Antonio, whose physical style could unnerve Mexico’s relatively young defence - the oldest defender in their squad is 27-years-old - and help the Reggae Boyz get on the scoresheet in Houston.
Mexico themselves should have enough to net too, with Santiago Gimenez a likely scorer after bagging 23 in 30 Eredivisie games for Ajax this term, so backing goals at both ends in an exciting Group B clash could be the way to go.
Both teams have scored in seven of Jamaica’s last 12 matches as well as in four of their last five meetings with El Tri and the Reggae Boyz should have enough to find the net alongside their opponents in Texas.
Many Premier League fans would expect former Leicester and Everton winger Demarai Gray to start for Jamaica, but it would actually be a surprise to see him get the nod ahead of Clermont forward Shamar Nicholson, who has 19 goals in 47 games for his country.
Nicholson is capable of playing alongside Antonio in a two or on the left of a front three, and he could have a big impact against Mexico.
Jamaica will look to start fast in Texas as they look to earn their first ever positive result at the Copa America and after netting the opener in their last four matches, including against the USA, they may get their wish against Mexico.
Nicholson scored two of those opening goals and also netted twice against Canada in a recent victory. He is in fine form for the Reggae Boyz and is a big price to get the ball rolling in Houston.
