Former French Open Winners
With 14 singles titles, Rafael Nadal is the all-time record holder at the French Open by a distance. Nadal most recently won in 2022, but was unable to defend his title in 2023 due to injury and he was knocked out in the first round in 2024, with Carlos Alcaraz winning the event for the first time.
Chris Evert has a record seven French Open titles in the women’s singles, picked up between 1975 and 1986. The defending women’s champion is Iga Świątek, who has won four times in the last five years.
Previous British winners of the women’s singles include Sue Barker in 1976 and Anne Haydon Jones in 1961 and 1966. You have to go all the way back to 1935 to find a British winner of the men’s tournament, when Fred Perry took the crown a year before turning professional. Andy Murray came close when he reached the final in 2016 before losing to Djokovic.
