The ATP French Open has had consistently favourites winning the past couple of decades. The largest odds winner came in 2015, when Stan Wawrinka in 2015. Wawrinka, who was seeded eighth at the time, triumphed over the odds-on favourite, Novak Djokovic, in the final to claim the title. His odds of winning the tournament were approximately 40/1 or higher. Wawrinka's victory marked his first French Open title and solidified his status as a formidable force on clay.
Men's French Open Tips
This year will be another year where it’s going to be difficult to find a realistic possibility of a winner being greater than 2/1. I like Jannik Sinner’s number, with bet365 placing him with odds at 14/1. The past few months he's solidified himself as a player that is going to be competing for titles week in week out. He'll be hoping he has a better time last year, where he had to retire against Rublev after winning the first set 6-1.
Although Jannik Sinner has only managed the one title this year, in comparison to his four titles in his true breakout season in 2021, his game has been unstoppable at times. The power and placement, as well as his improvement in returning serves has been crucial to his success. The Italian is currently holding a 28-7 record this year, which is his best win % in comparison to the other years. The players he's lost to have mainly been of high calibre, losing to the likes of Medvedev (3 sets), Tsitsipas (5 sets), Medevedev (again) and Alcaraz.
I think Carlos Alcaraz's loss to Marozsan the other week in Rome has been a blessing for the odds raising up for the Spaniard. Alcaraz has had an impressive year already, winning four titles (Buenos Aires, Indian Wells, Barcelona and Madrid).
To think Alcaraz is only 20 is a scary thought. He holds a 123-30 record in his professional career, and the past two years it's been 46-6. When looking at 2023, Alcaraz has had a 30-3 record overall, and 20-2 on the clay. With losses coming against Marozsan, Sinner and Norrie.
With Sinner and Norrie coming after winning a title the week before, so fatigue was definitely a factor. A fresh Alcaraz is going to be dangerous, and with Djokovic looking not like his old-self, he should be closer to evens. Djokovic is of course the main threat to Alcaraz. He'll be gunning for his third French Open title, after winning his last in 2021. Djokovic has lost four matches in his last nine matches, one of the worst runs the Serbian has had for a long time. The matches he's lost have been disappointing too, losing to Musetti, Lajovic and the very talented Rune (dropping sets to Dimitrov and Van Assche, while struggling in the first set against Gakhov has also been alarming).
