World Cup qualifier tips
Armenia v North Macedonia - Draw 23/10
As mentioned in my World Cup Playoffs preview yesterday , Group J is extremely close. Other than runaway winners Germany , the runners up playoff spot is wide open. All four teams still in contention play each other this gameweek and with so much on the line I’m backing a tight nervy affair with neither team willing to risk going out with a game to play. Considering that I'm taking the draw at 23/10.
Russia v Cyprus - Russia 1/6
Similarly in Group H , Russia will stay ahead of Croatia with a win over lowly Cyprus. If they do so and Croatia fail to beat Malta they’ll be on the plane to Qatar as group winners. Cyprus have conceded at least 2 goals in their last 5 matches and the Russians have won their last 4. Surely they have far too much firepower for the hapless Cypriots?
Greece v Spain - Spain 9/20
Are you starting to see the pattern by now? European supergiants Spain simply have to win away in Athens to keep the pressure on top of the table Sweden. Luis Enrique's men won last time out v Kosovo and I can see them doing the same to set up a final day showdown on Saturday night between the top 2. Spanish top goalscorer Ferran Torres is missing through injury as is Barcelona starlet Ansu Fati but they should still have enough strength in depth to defeat the Greeks.
Georgia v Sweden - Sweden 9/20
As discussed above Sweden needs to stay ahead of the Spaniards with a win at the Batumi stadium and I can see them having no problems dispatching bottom of the table Georgia in this clash. Janne Andersson will be hoping top scorer Emil Forsberg can strike again to bury the minnows. Veteran superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic is still in the Swedish squad but i’m not sure he will be risked in this game with the huge Spain clash on the horizon.
Republic of Ireland v Portugal - Portugal 4/11
Group A sees Portugal sat lagging behind group leaders Serbia but this is their crucial game in hand. Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny and his men have had an extremely disappointing campaign and will be looking to keep up their unbeaten run in their last 3 fixtures but Cristiano Ronaldo, Diogo Jota, Bruno Fernandes and co should still have enough in reserve to get past the Republic and set up the big final gameday match against the Serbs.
