Just a couple of hours after the end of the game on Friday, Gareth Southgate will have to submit his final 26-man squad that he will be taking with him on the plane to the 2024 European Championships.
England are the current favourites with the bookmakers to go all the way and be crowned Champions, but first they face Iceland in a friendly. A team who have fond memories of playing against the Three Lions after their historic 2-1 triumph over England at Euro 2016.
After their 3-0 win against Bosnia on Monday, which snapped a three game winless streak, Southgate’s side are 1/10 to win on Friday evening. The draw can be backed at 8/1, while for those who fancy a major upset, 18/1 is available on the Iceland win.
England vs Iceland Predictions
Iceland have failed to qualify for three consecutive major tournaments after making their inaugural appearance at a World Cup back in 2018. Despite a scattering of talented players playing around Europe, Iceland have by far the inferior squad here and after two England wins to nil in the Nations League when they last met in 2020, I can only see another home win here.
Friendly matches involving England tend to be rather underwhelming and I recommended a Three Lions win and Under 3.5 goals on Monday when they saw off Bosnia. That now means eight of their last nine wins in friendlies have featured under 4 goals, however I’m going to allow for under 6 to be scored in this clash as I feel Iceland represent an easier test and we will see a stronger England starting XI.
One player who should start the game is Harry Kane who came off the bench on Monday and scored England’s third of the game. Record goal-scorer and penalty taker, Kane now has 63 international goals to his name and with eight of those arriving in friendlies, I’m backing him to bag at Wembley.
For those punters looking for something at a bit more of a price, I’d like to highlight the 10/1 that is available with Sky Bet for Phil Foden to score from outside the box. No player in the Premier League scored more goals from outside the box than the Manchester City man this season, with 6 of his 19 top-flight strikes coming from distance.
It’s been a sensational season for Foden who is in the form of his life and is one of the most accurate shooters in world football. With his short back-lift, the six-time Premier League winner can let off attempts when defenders think pulling the trigger isn’t possible, and with bet365 having this same bet at just 6/1, I think the 10/1 offering from Sky is worth getting behind.
