Portugal and Ghana locked horns in Doha on Thursday 24th November in what proved to be a cracking clash and one which ultimately ended 3-2 to Portugal. Read More
Group H
Thu, 24th Nov - 16:00
Stadium 974, Doha
Fernando Santos' Portugal have been installed as the favourites to open up with a win and stamp three early points on the board, while Ghana are on the hunt for their first World Cup win in 12 years.
Portugal had to progress through to their sixth successive World Cup finals the hard way after finishing second to Serbia in Group A. They went on to beat Turkey in the semi-finals of the play-offs, then defeated Italy's conquerers North Macedonia in the final to book their place in Qatar. The relief was palpable.
Portugal's best ever finish was third back in 1966, 40 years later they reached the semi-finals once again - finishing 4th in 2006 - however they've failed to make it past the last-16 in each of their last three appearances in the finals.
They have recent pedigree, having won Euro 2016 and the 2018/19 UEFA Nations League, now the aim is to go all the way in the World Cup. Given the strength of their starting-11 they pose a threat to everyone; we're talking Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, João Cancelo, Diogo Jota, Joao Felix and a certain Cristiano Ronaldo, who could be set for his final World Cup.
After missing out on the party in 2018, Ghana qualified for their fourth World Cup after they edged out Nigeria on away goals in the third round of qualifying. The Black Stars memorably reached the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup - just don't mention Luis Suarez - but were winless in their last outing back in Brazil 2014.
In their ranks they have some top talent including Arsenal's Thomas Partey, Ajax youngster Mohammed Kudus, and Qatar-based Andre Ayew.
Ghana and Portugal have only ever faced-off once which came back in the group stages of the 2014 World Cup. Portugal won 2-1 thanks to a Cristiano Ronaldo winner but it wasn't enough to send his country through to the knockout-stages, whereas Ghana finished bottom of the group with a single point.
