Mexico and Poland get their respective Group C campaigns underway against each other on 22nd November in Doha. Read More
- Our man Steve Chambers has previewed this one and picked out a couple of his best bets for the game.
Group C
Tue, 22nd Nov - 16:00
Stadium 974, Doha
With duels against Argentina to come, both countries will be determined to stamp an early win on the board, with the bookies struggling to split these two sides in the betting and on-paper they look closely matched.
This looks like being a critical game in Group C with Argentina overwhelming favourites to top the group. Therefore, these two will see this match as being a potential decider on who can join them in the last sixteen.
Mexico won eight, drew four times and had two defeats on their way to qualifying for the finals; finishing second behind Canada in Concacaf final qualification. Canada and USA were the two teams to beat the Mexicans in qualifying, but they essentially qualified without any drama.
It was the opposite for Poland who finished as Group I runners up in European qualifying behind England. This meant that Poland had to come through the new Euro play-off format where they beat Sweden in a one-off match after Russia were removed from the competition.
In terms of players to watch out for, Mexico's record goalscorer Javier Hernandez is still getting a game but Mexico's new talisman is Wolves' Raul Jimenez, who will hope to recover in time following an injury. In what is an experienced squad, a lot of the Mexicans play in their homeland, but the likes of Edson Alvarez plies his trade for Ajax.
Poland are spearheaded by the sensational Robert Lewandowski who has still yet to really fire at a big international championships despite scoring for fun domestically for Bayern and now Barcelona. The Pole has scored over 70 times for his country - a record - and he also has well over a century of caps for the national team.
Another experienced squad, although you do wonder if they have the legs for a campaign in Qatar. Grzegorz Krychowiak looked out of his depth in the Euros last year, emphasis will be on playmaker Piotr Zielinski who pulls the strings for Napoli in Serie A.
The two teams have met five times before, four of them friendlies where three times the pair drew 1-1. The have met in the World Cup before way back in 1978 in Argentina where Poland wound up 3-1 winners.
