Germany are the favourites to get off to a winning start ahead of a blockbuster duel against Spain in their second match. However, Japan have reached the last-16 in three of their last five World Cups and will be eyeing up an opening shock here.
As you'd expect Germany are the hot favourites to kick things off with a win.
Qualifying for the finals with ease, their 27 points was equal best in European qualifying with Denmark. The Germans will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing Euros in 2021 where they only picked up one win against Portugal and were ultimately knocked out in the last-16 by England.
Japan qualified comfortably for the finals in Qatar albeit as second place in their Asia qualifying group behind Saudi Arabia. Seven wins and just two defeats against Oman and Saudi Arabia was enough to see them finish seven points clear of Australia in third place.
Japan have a pretty experienced squad and the likes of captain Maya Toshida and talisman Takumi Miramino will be familiar names to many. Other players to watch out for are Takehiro Tomiyasu of Arsenal and the Celtic pair of Kyogo Furuhashi and Reo Hatate. Up front, Takuma Asano plays in Germany for Vfl Bochum.
Germany have met Japan just the two times, both friendlies, and most recently in 2006 where Japan managed to get a 2-2 draw.
