Japan enjoyed a dream start to life in Qatar, coming back from a goal down to shock Germany 2-1, however they then suffered a surprise defeat to Costa Rica, only to stun Spain 2-1 to claim top spot and progress into the knockout stages where they faced 2018 runners-up Croatia.
