Match Preview: Switzerland vs Italy
Switzerland vs Italy promises to be one of the most competitive contests in the round-of-16. Switzerland came within a whisker of beating Germany and winning Group A, where they defeated Hungary and drew against Scotland in what was ultimately a second-place finish. The Swiss have proved over time how tough to beat they are, having lost just once in 17 matches over the last 18 months, and they certainly won't be intimidated by the defending champions.
Italy won all three group stages matches en route to lifting the trophy three years ago, however, they've been underwhelming so far in Germany. They squeezed past Albania in their opening match, were then outplayed by Spain in a 1-0 defeat, and were saved by a 98th minute equaliser in their final Group B game with Croatia, which meant they qualified in second.
Best Betting Markets for Switzerland vs Italy
It's difficult to look past a draw at 2/1 in 90 minutes given that this has been the outcome of nine of Switzerland's last 14 matches, including three of the last four, which have all been 1-1; this price is 5/1 to occur on Saturday.
Italy have drawn three of their last eight games while three of their four knockout stage matches at Euro 2020 went into extra-time, as did both of Switzerland's knockout stages matches at that tournament. Furthermore, six of the last 11 meetings between the countries have been drawn.
Switzerland vs Italy Head-To-Head Statistics
Switzerland and Italy will lock horns for the 61st time on Saturday. Italy boast a far superior head-to-head record with 29 wins to Switzerland's seven, while 24 games have been drawn.
Italy are undefeated in this fixture in 11 matches dating back to 1993, which is Switzerland's only victory since 1982.
However, five of the last six duels have been draws, including both 2022 World Cup qualifiers. The Swiss side would go on to win the group while Italy infamously failed to make it to Qatar after they flopped in the play-offs. However, Italy comprehensively beat Switzerland 3-0 at Euro 2020 en-route to winning the trophy: could history repeat itself three years later?
