Top Athletics Competitions To Bet On
Like all top sports, the athletics calendar offers a wealth of exciting events taking place around the world. Let’s take a look at the main ones to look out for.
Olympics
Held every four years, the next Olympic Games will take place in France in summer 2024. The first official Olympic Games was back in 1896 in Athens and covered 43 events. Today, athletes participate in 339 events, ranging from track and field to swimming, gymnastics and volleyball. In fact, we will see some new additions to the events schedule in 2024 with climbing, surfing and skateboarding joining the show.
IAAF World Athletics Championships
Running every two years, Budapest is next to host the World Championships this summer, followed by Tokyo in 2025. There’s a packed schedule to look forward to with 49 events held across nine days. Road events will take up the morning slots across five separate days leading up to the crowd favourite track events each evening.
European Athletics Championships
Like the World Championships, the European Championships runs biannually — in June 2024 the action is set to take place in Rome, 50 years since the Italian capital last hosted the event. It will also be the first time walking events are scheduled during an Olympic year, as until this point they have been excluded when the two events meet in one year. Excitingly for the Brits, the 2026 Championships will be hosted at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
Commonwealth Games
Like the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games is quadrennial. The next event is scheduled for March 2026 in Victoria, Australia. It’s a huge event that sees over 5,000 athletes participate in 19 different sports. England achieved a total of 176 medals from the 12 day event in 2022, finishing second in the medals table behind Australia, while Canada came third. This will be the sixth time Australia have hosted the Games, meaning we should be in for a well prepared and thrilling couple of weeks.
Diamond League
The Diamond League calendar comprises 14 annual athletics meetings featuring elite athletes in track and field competitions. This year has seen events in Paris, Oslo, Monaco, London, with the last one in September held in Eugene, Oregon. The first Diamond League meet was in 2010 when it took over from the IAAF Golden League. Looking at the medals table, Great Britain stands in fifth position, joint with Germany and behind Ethiopia, Jamaica, Kenya, and the USA in top spot.
Paralympics
Tokyo held the venue for the 2020 Paralympics, making it the first city to host the games on two occasions. The next Games will be in Paris from 28 August 2024, showcasing the sporting excellence of over 4,400 athletes across 12 days. With 22 sports and more than 540 events, it’s sure to be a thrilling spectacle.
British Championships
This event began in 2007 when it took over from the previous AAA Championships. Held annually, the British Championships has routinely taken place in either Manchester or Birmingham. It’s a busy competition that features over 800 of our best athletes competing across two days. If competitors needed any more motivation to win, places will be up for grabs for the GB and NI team heading to Budapest later this year for the World Athletics Championships.
