Wimbledon Women's 2023 Odds: Back Sabalenka for success on grass
As the prestigious Wimbledon tournament approaches, anticipation among tennis enthusiasts and betting enthusiasts alike is building up. The WTA Wimbledon Championship promises thrilling matches and fierce competition as the world's top female tennis players vie for the coveted title on the grass courts of the All England Club. In this piece, Max Saakyan delves into the top contenders and their chances of claiming glory at his personal favourite Grand Slam.
Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, with its origins dating back to 1877. The event takes place annually over two weeks in late June and early July, captivating audiences with its rich traditions and prestigious atmosphere.
Over the years, Wimbledon has witnessed exceptional performances from remarkable women tennis players. Legends such as Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King, Steffi Graf, Venus Williams, and Serena Williams have left an indelible mark on the tournament's history. Their achievements at Wimbledon have solidified their place among the greatest players in the sport.
Wimbledon Tips
Aryna Sabalenka has been playing some great tennis this year, and has solidified herself as the number two behind Iga Swiatek. She won her first ever grand slam earlier this year at the Australian Open, and has so far gone 35-7 this season, getting more wins this season than last year already.
Her game should suit the grass, we saw this last year when she reached the semi finals of Hertogenbosch. She wasn't allowed to compete at Wimbledon due to her being from Belarus, but she did have success the year before in 2021 where she reached the semi finals, losing out to Pliskova after winning the first set.
When Sabalenak is mentally strong, she’s so difficult to beat. The odds of 11/2 look like good value, for a player who will be such a big favourite in +90% of her matches.
Barbora Krejcikova comes in as a slight dark horse on the grass, but after finding some form last week and reaching the finals (losing out to Ostapenko in three sets), there proceeds to be some nice value for the Czech. She's enjoyed the faster courts this year, and won in Dubai after beating Begu, Kasatkina, Kvitova, Sabalenka, Pegula and Swiatek. An insane list of players to beat in a single week.
I think her style and play actually fits in well on grass courts. She hasn't had tremendous success at Wimbledon in the past, losing out to Tomljanovic in the third round last year, but she did reach the round of 16 in 2021 where she lost to eventual champion Ash Barty. The odds of 25/1 is looking like some nice value here.
One more mention is Qinwen Zheng. I've spotted a slight outlier on a couple of bookies, giving us 125/1 odds. Though she truly does have a long shot, and I'm not sure I fully trust her to be consistent for two weeks straight, I do think this is a nice angle to attack.
