US Open Women's 2023 Odds: 14/1 and 50/1 selections appeal in New York
The final Grand Slam of the year promises intense battles, emotional victories, and unforgettable moments. With a star-studded lineup ready to compete for glory, let's delve into the anticipated highlights and players to watch in the upcoming WTA US Open. Max Saakyan provides his thoughts on the tournament and makes a case for two selections.
Serena Williams, a true modern-day icon, has defined the tournament in the 21st century. Her unmatched athleticism, steely determination, and 23 Grand Slam titles have cemented her legacy as one of the greatest athletes of all time.
The WTA US Open has witnessed unforgettable moments that have left an indelible mark on the sport. The Arthur Ashe Stadium, named after the legendary champion, has been the canvas for history-making performances. From underdogs defying odds to under the lights epics, the tournament consistently delivers drama that transcends the sport.
Last year's US Open saw a poor showing from the top seeds, with four of the top seven players exiting either in the first or second round. We saw Iga Swiatek beat Ons Jabeur 6-2 7-6 (5) to claim her third major title and the second of the season.
She comes into this year's US Open as a heavy favourite, but without the same domination as she had last year. She failed to reach the semi-finals of Wimbledon this year, losing out to Svitolina in the quarter-finals, and more recently lost to Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula in the semi finals in the previous two Masters events.
Though we did see a similar loss of form last year, where after Wimbledon she lost in the quarter-finals to Caroline Garcia, then to Beatrice Haddad Maia in the Round of 16, and then to Madison Keys again in the Round of 16, and in the end did dominate the US Open and win with ease. With that being said, I’m personally avoiding any Iga Swiatek outrights.
I think we're getting a nice price for Jessica Pegula, with 14/1 odds. She's having a very good season so far, going 43-14 and has had some positive performances in the Grand Slams, with two quarter-final appearances (Australian Open and Wimbledon).
Pegula won her first ever Masters title this year in Montreal, where she had to beat Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek to clinch the title. Jessica Pegula likes these hard court conditions, and we saw that last year where she lost in a tight two-set battle to Iga Swiatek in the quarter-finals.
Madison Keys might not be coming into this US Open full of confidence, with some lacklustre performances post-Wimbledon losing out to Maria Sakkari and Elise Mertens, and worryingly pulling out of Montreal due to a glute injury. If the American is back at full fitness, she’ll fancy herself in this year’s US Open.
Keys has had her best Grand Slam success at the US Open, reaching the final back in 2017 where she lost to fellow American Sloane Stephens 6-3 6-0. The year after she reached the semi finals, losing out to eventual champion Naomi Osaka. Since then, she has failed to reach the quarter-finals. She'll be hoping it's going to be different this year, and I like the 50/1 odds that are currently on offer to us.
