The US Open has provided some of the most memorable moments in tennis history. From Arthur Ashe's historic victory in 1968 as the first African American male to win a Grand Slam, to Serena Williams' emotional journey to become the all-time leader in women's singles titles, the tournament is a canvas for players to etch their names in the sport's lore.
What sets the US Open apart is its electrifying atmosphere. The roof and night sessions are one of the best things about the Grand Slam. The retractable roof over Arthur Ashe Stadium ensures play continues uninterrupted, even in adverse weather conditions. Night sessions under the lights create an entirely different ambiance, adding a touch of drama to the proceedings. These night matches have seen epic showdowns and dramatic turnarounds that keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
One of the famous matches was back in 2005, where Andre Agassi faced James Blake. It started at 10:16pm and lasted over three hours, with Agassi winning 3-6 6-3 6-3 3-6 7-6. Agassi famously said after the match “1:15 in the morning and 20,000 people are still here. I wasn’t the winner; tennis was.”
In the Open Era, Roger Federer, alongside Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras, lead in the most US Open titles with five. Rafael Nadal and John McEnroe are a close second with four each. Novak Djokovic will be hoping to tie that, with the Serbian winning three US titles, with his latest being in 2018.
Last week we saw Novak Djokovic go against Carlos Alcaraz, where the Serb won 5-7 7-6 7-6. It was one of the best matches of the year. Not only was it an amazing watch, but it’s a match we might see again in just two weeks time on the biggest stage. Both players are a step above any player, and I think we can see a Novak Djokovic vs Carlos Alcaraz final.
With that being said, Carlos Alcaraz hasn’t looked as reliable since his Wimbledon title win. In his run at Cincinnati last week, he needed three sets in every single match. This was against Jordan Thompson, Tommy Paul, Max Purcell, Hubert Hurkacz and Novak Djokovic.
The week prior, he lost to Tommy Paul in three sets. but with Novak Djokovic, we've seen dominance. He won every match in two sets apart from the final, where he beat the Spaniard in three. The top players he beat in straight sets were Taylor Fritz (6-0 6-4), Gael Monfils (6-3 6-2) and Alex Zverev (7-6 7-5).I think the 6/4 option for Novak Djokovic shows some value.
I've been in awe of Jannik Sinner for quite some time now. He finally made his best ever run at a Grand Slam at Wimbledon this year, where he reached the semi finals losing out to Novak Djokovic in straight sets. Depending on the draw, Jannik Sinner has a great chance of going far here. The 11/1 each-way odds we're seeing for the Italian is showing some value.
Jannik Sinner has had an amazing year so far, winning two titles including the Canadian Masters earlier this month where he just dropped one set against Gael Monfils. He beat Matteo Berrettini (6-4 6-3), Gael Monfils (6-4 4-6 6-3), Paul (6-4 6-4) and Adam De Minaur (6-4 6-1) to clinch that title. He's had more hard court success this year too, winning in Montpellier and reaching the semi final of Indian Wells (losing to Carlos Alcaraz) and the final of Miami (losing to Daniil Medvedev).
