Portugal vs Spain Preview
Having landed the Euro 2024 crown, Nations League holders Spain are looking to win their third consecutive international competition on Sunday and further cement their status as one of the favourites for the 2026 World Cup.
Standing in their way are a Portugal side who have tasted victory in this tournament themselves back in 2019 and are desperate to prove that their new generation of young stars are ready to step up and replace the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo in what should be a fascinating watch.
Portugal vs Spain Tips
After this bet won for us in Portugal’s semi-final, it would be rude not to go in again at a backable price.
Roberto Martinez’s men have been leaning into their attacking strengths in this Nations League campaign, averaging 16.33 shots per game.
This has led to their opposition taking 9.11 goal kicks per game with at least six in seven of their last eight matches. Goalkeepers against them have also been kept busy, needing to make 4 saves per game and eight of their nine games in the competition have seen this leg of the double land.
Where Spain are concerned, they’re also a side that look to dominate the ball, however, they’re far from defensively solid giving up 11.45 shots per game.
They take an average of 6.55 goal kicks per game and in their chaotic semi-final on Thursday, France forced 11. Unai Simon has made 19 saves across Spain’s last five matches with at least two in each of those and given what’s at stake, we can expect him to be made to work by a strong Portuguese front line.
Ever since Euro 2024, Nico Williams has set about making the left wing position his own and has consequently become one of their most dangerous attacking outlets.
The Athletic Club winger has been shooting on sight throughout the Nations League with 4.39 per 90 and across his last four starts for his country he has hit the target 11 times, landing this bet in every game. He was at his menacing best in the semi-final, scoring the opener from one of his five efforts at goal, of which three hit the target and so will be full of confidence and needing no invitation to pull the trigger.
For all their attacking exploits throughout this competition, Portugal have only kept two clean sheets and are undoubtedly vulnerable to strong attacking setups. They’ve conceded an average of 4.89 shots on target per game and against a Spain side who manage 6.82 per game themselves, they’re going to be forced to defend well.
Florian Wirtz played on the left side of Germany’s attack against them in the semi-final and had two shots on target and considering Williams’ form, he looks well placed to produce a similar attacking output.
