Liverpool took control of the Premier League title race when Manchester City and Arsenal played out a goalless draw at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon after they had beaten Brighton, but nothing less than three points will do against struggling Sheffield United on Thursday as they look to stay clear at the summit.
It has taken the Blades a long time to wake up to the scale of their predicament and they must be cursing after allowing two-goal leads slip away in their last two matches against Bournemouth and Fulham, both of which ending in draws.
It would be a huge shock if they were to leave Anfield with the points as Jurgen Klopp’s side are undefeated in their last 27 home league games and are now favourites to win the Premier League title, but Chris Wilder’s side have no option now but to go on the offensive, so that could make for a more interesting clash than the odds suggest.
Liverpool vs Sheffield United Tips
Arsenal, Manchester City and Manchester United are the only visiting teams who have taken anything from their visits to Anfield this season, but it has not always been plain sailing for Klopp’s side as they bear down on the title run-in.
The Reds had to come from behind to earn a 2-1 win over Brighton on Sunday and that was the eighth time in their last nine home league games that they have conceded a goal.
The only occasion they kept a clean sheet during that run was a goalless draw against United, when their visitors showed little endeavour to earn anything more than a point and hardly got out of their own half.
The Blades, meanwhile, have scored five goals in their last two games and their problem has been they have been unable to hold onto their leads.
Having started the week with seven points separating them from safety, the visitors have little choice but to go on the front foot and the Reds have shown they can be prone to the odd lapse if they are not completely on the ball.
Mohamed Salah had 11 shots at goal against Brighton, including what proved to be the winning goal, but one player who has caught the eye over the last few weeks is Luis Diaz.
The Colombian showed razor-sharp reactions to net the Reds’ equaliser on Sunday after Danny Welback’s opener for the Seagulls, and there is a decent chance he will be able to set Liverpool on their way again when they face the Blades.
Diaz had 10 and five shots in recent matches against the two other teams who started the week in the bottom three, Luton and Burnley, scoring in both games, so he is capable of dominating affairs against those teams struggling at the bottom of the table.
Expect him to play more than just a supporting role for Liverpool’s Egyptian star.
