League Two Relegation Odds: Struggling Stevenage swap Paul Tisdale for Steve Evans
Stevenage have lost patience with Paul Tisdale after less than four months, and in turn appointed Steve Evans as their new manager.
Former Exeter and Bristol Rovers boss Tisdale only replaced Alex Revell in late November, but scraped just three wins from 21 games in The Boro dugout; a poor return that leaves the relegation-threatened club dangling dangerously above the drop zone in 22nd, without a win in nine games.
It's been an extremely disappointing 18 months for two-time League Two promotion-winner Tisdale, who has just eight wins on his CV from his last two jobs at Bristol Rovers (5 wins from 19 games) and Stevenage (3 wins from 21 games)
Stevenage previously tried to appoint Evans in November, but had an approach rejected by Gillingham. Now, after leaving the Gills in January, the Scot has made a swift return to the touchline with Stevenage; his tenth spell in management.
After opting to swap Tisdale for Evans, Chairman Phil Wallace said:
“Paul has worked tirelessly for us since he joined but we have won three points from the last nine games to drop into a relegation fight. With nine games to go, we have to change our fortune and we are hoping Steve will do that."
Evans brings with him a wealth of experience, having managed nearly 600 matches in the Football League. The Scot led Rotherham from League Two to the Championship, has promotions from spells at Crawley and Boston, while he’s managed the likes of Leeds, Mansfield, and Peterborough.
His next task is simple: preserve Stevenage’s Football League status.
At the time of his appointment, Evans' new side are one place and three points above the relegation zone. However, they’ve played two more matches than the team immediately below them, Oldham. They've also played more games than the two teams immediately above them, Barrow and Leyton Orient.
There's no escaping the fact that Stevenage are in terrible form. They’ve picked up just three points from a possible 27 dating back to the end of January, which is when they last won a game.
With just nine games to go, Evans needs to find a winning formula sharpish. His first match on Saturday is a trip to his former employers Mansfield, followed by a dart down to Devon where they'll face promotion-chasing Exeter. Then it's the big one in the form of a crunch six-pointer at home to Oldham, while they still have to play other teams around them including Colchester, Scunthorpe, Rochdale, and Carlisle.
Rock-bottom Scunthorpe, who are 10 points adrift of safety, are now priced at just 1/250 to go down. Oldham are odds-on to join them in the National League at 8/11, while Evans’ Stevenage can be found at 15/8, ahead of Colchester (10/1), Barrow (12/1), and Carlisle (16/1), with Leyton Orient out at 25/1 - full odds below.
