Fiji vs Portugal Betting Tips: Two predictions for the final Rugby World Cup group game
Fiji and Portugal will play out the final pool match of the 2023 Rugby World Cup in Toulouse on Sunday night with the flourishing Fijians knowing that a solitary point would see them qualify alongside Wales and duly knock out Australia in tremendous fashion. Likely to set up a quarter-final date with England should they gain that all-important point Fiji will head into their clash with lowly Portugal as red-hot favourites and they should have far too much firepower for their opposition in this Pool C encounter.
Our man Steve Chambers previews Sunday evening's clash and picks out his two tips for the game, which should be a comfortable evening for Fiji, who can send Australian packing in the group stages for the first time ever...
Fiji v Portugal Tips
A win, a draw, a try bonus point or a losing bonus point. That is all Fiji need to gain from their Rugby World Cup clash with Portugal on Sunday to make it through to the knockout stages and set up a likely quarter-final with England, which would subsequently see Australia crash out of the tournament. However, Fiji will be expectant of a lot more against a Portugal side that have only managed to bag one draw in this tournament and it's the Fijians that are red-hot 1/18 favourites with BetMGM to grab the win in 80 minutes. Portugal, who were last seen losing 34-14 to Australia are available at around 10/1 while the draw is available at a whopping 50/1.
Fiji have been sensational this tournament as having nearly toppled Wales in their first match they then went and edged past a shocking Australia side and a win against Georgia has put them in pole position to join Wales in the knockout stages. Having not been in the knockout stages since 2007, Fiji have a stunning chance here, and providing they don't freeze on the big occasion, they should have far too much quality for a Portugal side that will be looking to bow out with a shock win.
No value is available in the betting market, but the handicap markets are interesting and while Portugal have failed to grab a win yet they have been pretty stoic in defence at times and have only conceded 80 points all tournament. With Fiji having only notched up 65 points in attack then it could be a relatively low-scoring affair, so why not snaffle the 9/10 with BetMGM for Portugal +20 points in the handicap market.
Fiji are likely to gain a decent lead in this event and will then have one eye on England next weekend, but it could see Portugal close in on them in the second half of the match and the handicap markets are certainly worth siding with Portugal in Sunday's game.
As mentioned above both sides have been far from free-scoring this tournament and with so much on the line for Fiji then it could well be a rather cagey affair at times with the Fijians looking for territory. With that in mind, it's worth backing the unders in the points market and bet365 have a cracking bet of 10/11 on Under 54.5 points to be scored in the match.
Undoubtedly, Fiji have more firepower in attack than their European rivals, but the Portuguese defence have been superb at times with Wales and Australia struggling to break them down during the tournament and they could well frustrate Fiji for large periods of the match. So, it's definitely worth getting stuck into the unders in the points markets and 54.5 points is a pretty high line.
For those looking for some bigger value elsewhere could snap up the 13/2 on offer with William Hill for a Fiji win by 11-15 points as ultimately Fiji will just have too much class for Portugal and with everything on the line for Fiji they can rise to the challenge and sparkle in the final group match of this pulsating Rugby World Cup.
