The ramifications of this result will have major impacts on both ends of the table.
The hosts are currently five points above the drop, any sort of result here would put real daylight between themselves and the dotted line heading into the final four games.
The Reds start the week second on goal difference and with Manchester City and Arsenal hot in pursuit of the title, we are at the stage of the campaign where dropping points could be fatal.
Everton vs Liverpool Tips
Much has been made of Everton’s shortcomings in attack and with good reason.
The Toffees have racked up an xG of 48.4 but only netted 34 times, an underperformance of over 14 goals which is not a huge surprise considering they have missed 56 ‘big chances.’
You don’t have to look very far to find the culprits. Between them, strikers Beto and Dominic Calvert-Lewin have scored eight goals from an xG of 17.8 which is a staggering underachievement for elite level frontmen.
Given their wasteful nature, it should come as little surprise to see that since Christmas, Everton have failed to score in eight of their 17 fixtures.
Against the traditional ‘big six’ they have failed to score in 60% of the games this term and against the top four, four of their six games have seen two or fewer goals.
A lack of goals has been a feature of recent Merseyside derbies with each of the last four seeing under 2.5 click.
Given the importance of this clash for both sides, I expect a cagey clash at Goodison.
Ashley Young finds himself at the centre of attention. The veteran could have conceded three penalties in the win over Nottingham Forest, a crucial game at the foot of the Premier League table and has since taken to winding up the opposition.
Interestingly enough, Young played a pivotal role in the 2-0 defeat at Anfield in the first Merseyside derby of the campaign.
Luis Diaz ran him ragged that afternoon as Young was booked twice within the first 37 minutes and could have committed a penalty.
After avoiding any sort of punishment on Sunday he is expected to start at right back here and guess who he is expected to play against? None other than Diaz.
It seems a little too obvious but backing Young to be shown a card appeals at 11/4.
Best of luck if you are backing any of these selections and please remember to gamble responsibly.
