England Women vs Wales Women Tips
England’s title defence got off to a rocky start with a disappointing 2-1 defeat to France in the first group game. However, Sarina Wiegman’s side came storming back with a 4-0 victory over a strong Netherlands side. The Lionesses could have won by more, with the scoreline flattering the Dutch, such was the dominance of the reigning champions.
Wales are competing in their first ever major tournament and have suffered 4-1 and 3-0 defeats against France and the Netherlands respectively, and should offer little resistance to England’s progress to the knockout stages.
The Lionesses know that a win will see them through, no matter the result in the Netherlands vs France clash. A draw or defeat, however, will leave their destiny in the hands of others, so expect no mercy from Wiegman’s side.
Wales have an outside chance of qualifying from the group should they defeat England by four or more goals and the Netherlands see off France. As such, the Welsh will need to come out and attack the Lionesses, leaving them vulnerable at the back to England’s lethal frontline, who will look to continue their fine form in front of goal.
Sarina Wiegman took a chance on Lauren James’ fitness when naming her in the England squad for the tournament, with the forward having missed three months of action due to a hamstring injury. The gamble has already paid off, with the Chelsea player netting twice in the victory over the Netherlands and running the show with the freedom afforded to her to dictate the English attack.
James’ first strike was a beautiful hit from the edge of the box, whereas her second showed her poacher’s instinct, sweeping home after Ella Toone's effort had been saved in the build-up.
After an ineffectual performance against France in the No.10 role, Wiegman tweaked the 23-year-old's position and gave her the freedom to cut inside from the right, where she had space to roam across the frontline and cause the Dutch defence all manner of problems. Expect more of the same from the England star against the weakest team in their group.
England Women vs Wales Women Team News
Ella Toone is expected to retain her place in the starting XI, with Wiegman likely to stick with an unchanged line-up for the final group game.
After excelling versus the Netherlands, Jess Carter should continue at the heart of the defence after switching roles with Alex Greenwood, who moved to left-back.
Alessia Russo, who has had goals disallowed in both group matches so far, will be eager to get off the mark for the tournament when she leads the line against Wales.
Wales, meanwhile, will assess the fitness of Hayley Ladd after she was an unused substitute in the 3-0 defeat to France. Olivia Clark, Hannah Cain and Rhiannon Roberts are all pushing for recalls after dropping to the bench last time out.
Veteran midfielder Jess Fishlock will remain a key attacking threat after becoming the oldest goalscorer in Women’s European Championship history.
The lineups for England Women vs Wales Women will be displayed below approximately one hour before kick-off.
