World Championship Day 7 Tips
In another compelling tie on the World Championship stage, the no.21 seed Mervyn King takes on the impressive north-east talent that is Ryan Joyce. Since coming on to the PDC tour, Joyce has impressed with consistent runs to the latter stages of tournaments and is a senior event winner on the Players Championship series.
In his opener, Joyce was made to work for his last gasp 3-2 win over Czech Republic youngster, Roman Benecky. After Joyce strolled to a two-set lead in no time at all, he was pegged back with the tie going all the way to an edgy last leg decider.
I expect Joyce to be more clinical and ruthless in his play, and with a tough opponent in Mervyn King, he won’t give the north east ace a moment’s peace. I’m anticipating a dramatic, high quality clash with longevity almost guaranteed.
If you compare the pairs averages and first 9 averages over the course of the year on-tour, King has the slightly higher 3DA [94.3] compared to Joyce’s 92.43 and in terms of scoring power, which can be assessed look at their first 9 statistics, King again leads that category with a seasonal first 9 average of 102.52 compared to Joyce’s 99.25.
So, with all that information digested, King may have the upper hand in terms of consistency, but this is the World Championship, set-play must be also taken into consideration, here and I feel this particular tie will go to a fifth and deciding set, which is available at 13/8.
In an action-packed evening session at the Palace, the no.29 seed Vincent van der Voort takes on Adam Hunt, who impressed in his opening 3-0 rout of Croatia’s Boris Krcmar. Van der Voort has battled through his struggles on tour over recent years, but the big Dutchman has always produced his best game on the big stage.
Van der Voort enjoyed a memorable showing at Ally Pally 12 months ago, reaching the last 16, losing out to Daryl Gurney (4-2) on that occasion. Comparatively, Hunt reached the last 32 at the world championship 12 months ago, losing out to Dirk van Duijvenbode (4-0).
But, I for one have been mightily impressed with Hunt’s recent form on the big stage as of late, which showed in his highly convincing win over Boris Krcmar. In a tough second-round encounter, I think Hunt is excellent value for the win, here. It's available at 2/1.
In another tasty second-round clash, the no.9 seed, Michael Smith takes on Dutchman, Ron Meulenkamp. In my event preview ahead of the tournament, I suggested that Smith could have a really strong win at Ally Pally and secure his first, elusive big televised win and what an achievement that would be!
We all know the scoring power that Smith possesses, up there with the best in world darts. Over recent years, ‘Bully Boy’ overcame a few minor setbacks and to his own admission, Smith admits that he’s in such a better place mentally and has been really putting the work in to improve his mentality and it’s visible for us all to see.
Smith enjoyed a really strong run at the Grand Slam of Darts back in November, reaching the quarter-finals, only losing out to a late, eight leg barrage from Peter Wright.
Standing in Smith’s way is Ron Meulenkamp, a very capable competitor. In the Dutchman’s opener, he overcame Lisa Ashton in straight sets, despite not producing his best form, averaging just 87 and came up dry in the maximum hitting stakes.
The question is, will Meulenkamp improve his performance from that win over Ashton in round one? Well, I think that’s an absolute certainty. Over recent years, Meulenkamp has established himself as one of the big-hitters on-tour with some huge averages. I’m predicting that the Dutchman will take a set, with Smith emerging victorious by three sets-to-one, available at 11/5.
The three bets above can be combined into a treble, again at bet365, which pays 24/1.
