World Championship Day 5 Tips
In one of the stand out ties in the second round, Ross Smith takes on former Lakeside World Champion Stephen Bunting in a mouth-watering clash on paper. In his opening round win over Canada’s Jeff Smith, Ross Smith produced a below par display, going away from his form in 2021 to secure the win.
If Smith is to push Stephen Bunting to the limit then he’ll need to significantly up those levels and I for one think he’ll do exactly that. Over the course of 2021, in a successful year on tour for Smith, the 32-year old boasts a seasonal average of 95.3 with a first 9 average of 104.9 which certainly highlights the scoring power he possesses.
If both players produce anything close to their best stuff, then we could have an invigorating contest on our hands. For Bunting, he’ll be looking to replicate the form that he produced at last year’s world championship, reaching the semi-finals, just losing out to Gerwyn Price, who went on to win the world title.
I mentioned Smith’s form over the course of the year and with inviting odds of 11/10, I’m sticking my neck out and going for a Ross Smith win.
When the draw was made for the world championship, this was one of the ties that really stood out. With Fallon Sherrock in the form of her life, reaching the quarter-finals at the Grand Slam of Darts in November, averaging 100 in a best of 31 leg encounter in a defeat to Peter Wright but nonetheless, she showed the world that she can produce solid, consistent stuff on a regular basis.
After being tipped to perhaps make the cut for the Premier League next year, standing in her way is the ever present Steve Beaton, who admittedly said that he didn’t favour being drawn against Sherrock prior to the draw.
In a hostile atmosphere at times at Ally Pally, can Beaton get over the potential boos and the partisan jeers from the crowd as well as having to endure a potential barrage of high scores from Sherrock?
With all those aspects considered, it’s not surprise that Sherrock goes into the tie as the favourite with the bookmakers, and I think that she’ll get the job done in what could potentially be a tough night at the office for the ‘Bronzed Adonis’. 8/11 is a respectable price for a Fallon Sherrock victory, here.
Finishing off Sunday’s action, arguably the most in-form player in world darts at the moment, Jonny Clayton takes on Ireland’s Keane Barry, who picked up his first world championship win at the third time of asking as he saw off Royden Lam in his opening round success.
Clayton, the overwhelming favourite in this one as aforementioned is the form player heading into the world championship, picking up four televised titles in 2021 such as The Masters, Premier League, World Cup of Darts and the World Grand Prix.
And, despite defeating Royden Lam in a slightly edgy 3-2 win, the young Irishman will have to produce his very top form if he’s to cause ‘The Ferret’ any problems.
That said, I do think that Barry could potentially sneak a set, which is available at even money.
