Coventry are in the hunt for a play-off place in the Championship this season, however their promotion hopes took a blow on Friday night when they were beaten 3-0 on home soil by Preston. As to be expected, Mark Robins’ men are the favourites with the bookmakers to advance to the sixth round, priced at 1/7 to win the game in 90 minutes. The draw can be backed at 8/1, while a historic victory for Maidstone is chalked-up at 14/1.
You have to go all the way back to 1978 for the last time that a team from below the fifth tier of the English football pyramid reached the fifth round of the FA Cup. George Elokobi’s side have already created history in the competition after seeing off Ipswich in the fourth round and now arrive here with the chance to reach the quarter-finals of the competition.
Coventry vs Maidstone Tips
The first selection we are touting on Monday evening is for both teams to score, which is available at just below even money at 19/20 with bet365. Maidstone have already got the better of Football League Clubs Barrow and Stevenage, who are chasing promotion from League Two and League One. They then went on to manage a 2-1 win at Ipswich at Portman Road and we believe they can get on the scoresheet here.
The Sky Blues have seen both teams find the net in their last five FA Cup ties, including when they lost 4-3 at home to non-league Wrexham in the third round last season. Looking at Coventry’s last 13 matches across all formats and this bet has clicked in 11 of those. The Stones have the ability to cause the hosts issues on Monday and we believe both teams to score looks a wise play in this David vs Goliath clash.
We’ve also taken a lean towards a selection from the shots on target market provided by bet365. Sam Corne of Maidstone is the player on our radar. The midfielder has scored in each of Maidstone’s last three FA Cup ties including the winning goal against Ipswich in the previous round.
With goals against three football league sides so far in the competition in Barrow, Stevenage and Ipswich we think 5/1 for him to hit the target once or more at Coventry looks a very backable price. Betfair and Paddy Power have this same bet priced considerably shorter at just 9/5, giving plenty of appeal to the much bigger offering from bet365.
